Prelude
William Wordsworth (1770-1850) is de oudste dichter van de romantiek: met de bundel Lyrische balladen, waarin ook een aantal gedichten van zijn iets jongere vriend Coleridge is opgenomen, begint een nieuw tijdperk. Na het verschijnen van die bundel begint hij aan een revolutionair en megalomaan project: zijn hele wereld wil hij vatten in een reusachtig gedicht in blanke (niet-rijmende maar wel metrische) verzen. Als inleiding geeft hij een beschrijving van zijn eigen jeugd, met name hoe het dichterschap zich in zijn geest gevormd heeft. In 1805 is hij daarmee klaar, en realiseert zich niet dat hij zijn kruit verschoten heeft. De ‘prelude’ publiceert hij niet: hij vindt het aanmatigend zichzelf op de voorgrond te stellen zonder dat daar een magnum opus op volgt. Zijn zuster en zijn vrouw denken er anders over: hij is nog niet dood of The Prelude verschijnt. Ze hadden helemaal gelijk: Wordsworth heeft nooit beseft dat zijn prelude zelf al het grote werk was.
