Jahrhundert führten die Erfindung künstlichen Lichts und dessen Verbreitung im privaten wie im öffentlichen Raum dazu, dass die Nacht in der Architektur eine andere Wirkmacht erhielt. Dieser Band ist ein erster Versuch, eine chronologische Nachtgeschichte der Architektur zu schreiben. Die Studien zeigen, in welchem Ausmaß die menschliche Identität zu allen Zeiten auch durch die Nacht bestimmt ist, ohne die die Räume des Wohnens, des Arbeitens und der Kultur nicht zu denken sind. Durch die Analyse und Untersuchung von "nächtlichen Szenen" will dieses Buch aufzeigen, dass die Nacht ein Labor ist, in dem Raum neu gedacht und schließlich neue Formen des Zusammenlebens entwickelt werden.
