This book sheds new light on Delft pottery from the 17th and 18th centuries. During this period, the Delft pottery industry took off, under the strong influence of a changing world. Delft potters were seen as true innovators. Today, ceramics is experiencing another heyday. A new vanguard of Dutch makers is rediscovering the age-old craft and taking a fresh look at the material and its significance. Pioneering Ceramics zooms in on innovation within the ceramic craft. The basic recipe of ceramics has hardly changed over the centuries, but the world in which ceramics are made has. Picasso

Picasso was al vroeg vertrouwd met het werken met diverse materialen. Net als in zijn schilderijen streefde hij naar vrije individuele expressie en een nieuwe vormentaal. Hij vervormde in een handomdraai een vers gedraaid kannetje tot duifje, beschilderde een vaas als uil en transformeerde en begeesterde zo het dode object. Hij bracht de keramiek letterlijk tot leven. Sculpturen uit Afrika en Oceanië deden hem beseffen dat de realiteit bepaald wordt door je fantasie. In 1948 vond zijn eerste expositie plaats met keramische objecten, beschilderde schalen en schotels. Zijn vrije geest verdraaide en vervormde de klassieke amforen en kruiken tot lichamen of dierfiguren. Vervolgens paste hij een beschilderingswijze toe die door cartouches en inschilderingen een complexe verschijningsvorm kregen, maar simpele toepassingen verhulden. Hij koos ervoor met een mesje insnijdingen te maken of dikke glazuren gedeeltelijk weer zichtbaar te maken door het gebruik van parafine waar het glazuur geen vat op had. Het resultaat was ronduit verbluffend. Opnieuw bewees Picasso zijn genialiteit. Hij plaveide de weg naar de ‘vrije vorm’ (freeform) in keramiek, meubelkunst en glas die ook bij de experimentele afdeling van de Porceleyne Fles in Nederland zijn weerslag had. Formafantasma: Oltre Terra. Why Wool Matters

In the exhibition "Oltre Terra. Why Wool Matters" the multidisciplinary design studio Formafantasma investigates the history, ecology and global dynamics of the extraction and production of wool. A wide range of artworks, agricultural and cultural objects, photographs, videos, and other materials shows how wool is more than simply a raw material for the design and textile industries. The domestic sheep as we know them today evolved over the course of hundreds of years. Humans gave sheep food and protection from predators and got wool in return - a material with magical properties that profoundly altered the course of both human and animal history. The wider installation of Oltre Terra is a critical take on the display mode of the diorama. Commonly used in natural history museums to represent a static scene from nature, here the diorama is exploded into an installation that contains six life-size reproductions of different sheep breeds, a carpet made from discarded wool fibers, as well as documents, films, by-products of manufacturing processes and various types of organic matter. All the elements are presented side by side to counteract persisting categorizations that separate human from animal and product from biological matter. Ed.: Kristian Wikborg Wiese, Marianne Yvenes.

'Kleurrijk keramiek' is en complete handleiding over het maken van keramiek op de draaischijf en het toepassen van vele kleurrijke decoratietechnieken. Keramiste Inge Burgerhoudt beschrijft in haar boek het draaien van schalen, kommen, borden, cilinders en vazen op de draaischijf. Vervolgens laat ze je zien hoe je ze kunt decoreren met engobes en schellak en technieken zoals sgraffito, intarsia, mishima en andere schilder- en uitsparingstechnieken. Van alle processen, zowel van het draaien als van het decoreren, zijn vele stap-voor-stapfoto’s opgenomen. Inge laat bovendien zien hoe je je eigen patronen en ontwerpen kunt maken. Haar kleurrijke keramiek gedecoreerd met motieven uit de natuur is daarvoor een bron van inspiratie.
