De Brinkkempercollectie van botanica in de Lage LandenHemelsleutel is een schitterend geïllustreerd boek dat de schoonheid weerspiegelt van de oudste Nederlandse en Vlaamse planten- en kruidenboeken, gecombineerd met een plezierige en luchtige geschiedenis van de botanie. De platen zijn afkomstig uit de verzameling van Ed Brinkkemper. Hij houdt zich al tientallen jaren hartstochtelijk bezig met plantenboeken uit de Lage Landen, waar hij een imposante collectie van heeft opgebouwd: van Dodoens Cruijdeboeck uit 1554 tot de befaamde Flora Batava en J. Commelins Horti Medici Amstelodamensis uit 1697. Bij deze overvloed schrijft Gemma Venhuizen aanstekelijk over de geschiedenis die achter de Brinkkemper-collectie schuilgaat. Ze behandelt de ontwikkeling van de botanie vanaf de oudheid, via Brunfels, Bock en Fuchs naar de grote drie: Rembertus Dodonaeus, Carolus Clusius, Matthaeus Lobelius. En behalve Abraham Munting, medicinale tuinen en exotische gewassen, de Commelins, de tuin van George Clifford, Linnaeus, stammen en klassen komen ook de boekdrukkunst en de kwetsbaarheid van boeken ruimschoots aan bod. De hemelsleutel is een plant met een naam die beschrijft wat kijken naar bloemen en planten kan doen: de hemel ontsluiten. Hemelsleutel bevat een rijke, esthetische keuze van meer dan honderd grote, ingekleurde platen die de ongekende schoonheid laten zien van onder veel meer het knopig helmkruid, de stijve naaldvaren, de wonderboom en de ronde zonnedauw.
