Het levensverhaal van Arjan Ederveen, geschreven door journalist Sara Berkeljon, bekend van de grote interviews in Volkskrant Magazine: een openhartig boek over liefde, verlies, vriendschap, eenzaamheid en creatieve drift. Hij brak halverwege de jaren tachtig samen met Tosca Niterink door met het legendarisch geworden kinderprogramma Theo en Thea (VPRO). Na Theo en Thea maakten Ederveen en Niterink voor volwassenen het al even memorabele Kreatief met Kurk en Borreltijd. Steeds met vaste regisseur en goede vriend Pieter Kramer, met wie Ederveen ook samenwerkte voor zijn bekroonde tragikomische serie 30 Minuten. Ederveen speelde daarnaast talloze andere theater-, film- en televisierollen. Rondom Ederveen heeft altijd een zweem van mysterie gehangen. Sara Berkeljon trok ruim een jaar met hem op. Ze waren samen in India, ze hielp in zijn tuin in Friesland, vergezelde hem naar tv-opnames en interviewde hem tientallen keren. Het leven van Ederveen wordt getekend door verlies. Zijn beide broers overlijden vroegtijdig; de oudste broer in de jaren negentig aan aids en de andere broer een paar jaar later onverwacht aan een bloedziekte. Ederveen vluchtte in zijn werk. Berkeljon sprak ook mensen uit zijn entourage, zoals Kees Prins, Pieter Kramer en Loes Luca. In Altijd van je af gaat Ederveen dieper in op de periode op de Kleinkunstacademie, het ontstaan van zijn succesvolle programma’s, de pijnlijke breuk met Niterink, de zorg voor zijn beide dementerende ouders, zijn liefde voor honden, zijn hekel aan waarom-vragen en zijn onconventionele huwelijk met Howie Getman. Altijd van je af is een ontroerend portret van een unieke, eigenzinnige en creatieve geest.
