Van vuur naar ijs - Fietsen van Vuurland naar Alaska

Wat bezielt iemand om een fietstocht van 28.000 kilometer te maken van het uiterste puntje in Zuid-Amerika naar Alaska? Marica van der Meer trotseerde de eindeloze vlakten van Patagonië, fietste door sneeuw en ijs dwars over de Andes en doorkruiste de jungle. ‘Dit is een geweldige ervaring’, schrijft ze als ze midden op de zoutvlakte van Uyuni haar tent opgeslagen heeft en naar de verblindend witte leegte om haar heen kijkt. ‘Zeven jaar geleden ben ik hier geweest met een Jeep. Ergens op de route zag ik fietsers. Dat vond ik toen zó indrukwekkend, dat mensen dat voor elkaar kregen. En nu ben ik zelf zo’n fietser!’ Van vuur naar ijs vertelt het verhaal over haar fietstocht in extremen: het indrukwekkende landschap van desolate woestijnen, bergen en jungle, ontmoetingen met de kleurrijke lokale bevolking, maar ook het eindeloze afzien, de uitputting en angst voor het onbekende.
