Omschrijving

Chastelard: A Tragedy is a play written by Algernon Charles Swinburne, first published in 1865. The play is set in the court of Mary, Queen of Scots, during her reign in Scotland. The central character is Chastelard, a French nobleman who falls in love with Mary and becomes her confidant. However, his love for her is unrequited, and he is ultimately executed for his actions. The play explores themes of love, desire, betrayal, and the conflict between personal passion and political duty. Swinburne's writing is known for its lyrical and poetic language, and this play is no exception. It is a powerful and emotional work that delves into the complexities of human relationships and the consequences of following one's heart.A Maid May Have Kissed Cheeks And No Shame In Them--yet One Would Not Swear.
