    Nose Dive

The ultimate guide to the smells of the universe - the ambrosial to the malodorous, and everything in between - from the author of the acclaimed culinary guides On Food and Cooking and Keys to Good CookingFrom Harold McGee, James Beard Award-winning author and leading expert on the science of food and cooking, comes an extensive exploration of the awe-inspiring world of smell. In Nose Dive, McGee takes us on a sensory-filled adventure, from the sulfurous nascent earth more than four billion years ago, to the sweetly fragrant Tian Shan mountain range north of the Himalayas, to the keyboard of your laptop, where trace notes of formaldehyde escape between the keys. We'll sniff the ordinary (wet pavement and cut grass) and extraordinary (fresh bread and chocolate), the delightful (roses and vanilla) and the unpleasant (spoiled meat and rotten eggs). We'll smell each other. We'll smell ourselves.Through it all, McGee familiarizes us with the actual bits of matter that we breathe in-the molecules that trigger our perceptions. Beginning with the origins of those molecules in interstellar space, McGee moves onward through the smells of our planet, the air and the oceans, the forest and the meadows and the city, all the way to the smells of incense, perfume, wine, and food. Here is a story of the world, of all of the smells under our collective nose. A work of astounding scholarship and originality, Nose Dive distills the science behind the smells, and reveals how our sense of smell has the power to trigger in us feelings that are the very essence of being alive.

    Information Theory for Complex Systems

An Information Perspective on Complexity in Dynamical Systems and Statistical Mechanics

Kristian Lindgren is a Professor Emeritus in Complex Systems at Chalmers University of Technology. Originating from a background in physics, he has applied this foundational knowledge to the interdisciplinary study of complex systems across a variety of disciplines. His key research areas include information theory and statistical mechanics, as well as the application of information theory to complex and self-organizing systems. Lindgren has also delved into game theory as it applies to evolutionary systems and has utilized agent-based modelling to understand economic systems. He was one of the founders of the International Masters Programme in Complex Adaptive Systems at Chalmers in 2000 and has also served as the Director for the Graduate School (Ph.D.) in Complex Systems.

The Next Generation of Emerging Applications

Prof. Tricia Breen Carmichael Prof. Tricia Breen Carmichael is a Professor in the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry at the University of Windsor. She received her PhD from the University of Windsor, and then spent two years as an NSERC postdoctoral fellow in the lab of Professor George M. Whitesides at Harvard University where she developed new methods for the 3D self-assembly of electrical connections. She then joined the IBM T.J. Watson Research Center in Yorktown Heights, New York as a Research Staff Member in the field of organic electronics. She currently leads a research program on stretchable and wearable electronic devices, with a focus on textile-based wearable electronics (e-textiles), wearable electroluminescent fabrics, and stretchable light-emitting devices and transparent conductors. Prof. Hyun-Joong Chung Hyun-Joong Chung is an Associate Professor of Chemical and Materials Engineering at the University of Alberta. He received B.S. from KAIST and Ph.D. from the University of Pennsylvania, where he studied the role of jamming nanoparticles in phase-separating polymer blends. After graduation, he worked on oxide semiconductors in Samsung Display, followed by postdoctoral training on stretchable bioelectronics at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Currently, he leads an interdisciplinary research program on understanding physicochemical properties of gels and elastomers with or without functional additives and reinforcements, as well as on translating the fundamental understanding to biomedical device applications.
