Adsorption of Coomassie Brilliant Blue by CAC and Kaolin

This book summarizes the present study deals with the removal of Coomassie brilliant blue dye by commercial activated carbon (CAC) and kaolin. The percentage removal of Coomassie brilliant blue dye on CAC and kaolin is found to decrease with the increase in initial concentration of dye. It is due to the lack of available active sites required for higher initial concentration. Langmuir and Freundlich adsorption isotherms were tested and found to be applicable. Mono layer coverage of dye molecules exist on the surface of this system. The percentage of removal of dye Coomassie brilliant blue was found to increase with the increase in contact time. The optimum contact time was found to be 30 min. The kinetic equations like Natarajan-Khalaf, Bhattacharya-Venkobachar and Lagergren equations were found to be applicable. Intra-particle diffusion model was found to be obeyed first order kinetics with the intra-particle diffusion as one of the rate determining step. The percentage of removal of dye Coomassie brilliant blue by adsorption on CAC was found to increase with decrease in pH.

Linear and Nonlinear Optical Spectroscopy and Microscopy

The nonlinear optical spectrum signal technology is a new type of optical characterization technology owing to its non-invasiveness and good biocompatibility. This book highlights a comprehensive introduction to the Stimulated Raman scattering (SRS), Anti-Stokes Raman Spectroscopy (CARS), Two-photon Excited Fluorescence (TPEF) and Second Harmonic Generation signals (SHG) technologies. The four types of nonlinear optical signals technologies, especially two-dimensional and three-dimensional imaging, have great application potential in physics, materials science, chemistry and biomedicine. The book covers principles, theoretical calculation methods, signal measurement methods and imaging specific methods. The theoretical part starts from the basics of nonlinear optics and the relationship with strong light, and gradually transitions to theoretical calculation methods for specific optical signals. it combines the classical theory and the quantum theory to help readers develop a thorough understanding of the technologies. The book is a good reference for graduate students majored in physics and chemistry and for researchers working on optics, photonics and materials science.

Soil chemistry: lesson proposals for secondary schools

Soil is present in the lives of all human beings and we depend on it for our survival. In view of this, the general aim of this work was to draw up proposals for sequences of lessons that could be taught by teachers of the Chemistry curriculum component to students in the first year of secondary school, with the central theme being 'soils' and specifically to show the importance of handling soil correctly; to identify the Chemistry content that can be worked on in secondary school.

  10. Assessment of soil contamination
    1. Teidiane , Santos Cardoso

    Assessment of soil contamination

Every year the consumption of petroleum products and biofuels, especially diesel oil and biodiesel, increases worldwide. In order to meet demand, there has been an increase in the number of petrol stations, making the installation of underground tanks inevitable. However, due to small fuel leaks that occur in tanks, and mechanical or human failures in unloading operations, there have been many cases of soil contamination, thus contributing to environmental degradation. In view of this, the aim of this study was to qualitatively analyze samples of soil possibly contaminated by petroleum products (diesel oil) and biofuels (biodiesel) collected around gas stations in the city of Porto Seguro (BA) using Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR) associated with the pattern recognition method (PCA). The analysis showed that there are regions of the spectrum in which the absorption intensity of biodiesel is appreciable, while that of diesel oil is negligibly small.

Ordinary Differential Equations: Linear and Nonlinear Systems, Dynamical Systems and Applications

The theory of ordinary differential equations is addressed in detail in this textbook, and is split into three sections: linear equations and systems, the general theory of nonlinear systems, and the theory of dynamical systems. These topics can be taken together or studied independently. In addition to standard materials on the theory of ordinary differential equations, this textbook specialises in covering non-standard materials related to this theory including the theory of linear equation and systems with holomorphic coefficients; Kneser's theorem on the complexity of the set of solutions in the absence of uniqueness; the method of sub- and supersolutions for cooperative systems; and a detailed construction of the global bifurcation diagrams for some parametric classes of one-dimensional boundary value problems, which are pivotal for applications of the theory. This is a self-contained, rigorous treatment of ordinary differential equations that is complemented by a variety of illustrating examples of the theory in practice. Many of these examples are related to models in Physics and Applied Sciences, making them suitable for students in Physics, Chemistry, Engineering, Mathematical Biology, Economics and Ecology as well as in Mathematics. Each chapter contains exercises to test students' understanding of the topic and concludes with some historical notes and further discussions.
