War Graves
War Graves isn’t supposed to be a tour guide, nor a history book. The author presents 200 photos of 60 war cemeteries erected during or after the major wars in Europe since 1870. It includes famous grave sites of Tyne Cot, Langemark, Lommel, Douaumont, and the Meuse-Argonne American Cemetery, to lesser-known cemeteries such as Stensholmen, Schiermonnikoog, and Himmerod. The black-and-white photos eliminate distracting elements such as green grass, colorful flowers, or golden sunlight. The viewer will look at an image and see the sobering reality.

Angel of Arnhem
Memories of September '44During the Battle of Arnhem Kate ter Horst-Arriëns lives with her family in the old vicarage next to the Old Church in Oosterbeek, the village where the battle is finally decided. There she and her husband are asked by the British to open their house as a first-aid post after the airborne landings on 17 September 1944. They agree, but the rapid victory that had been hoped for, fails to materialise and soon all rooms are crammed with wounded. Kate ter Horst is doing her utmost to help the often badly injured soldiers. It gives her the title ‘Angel of Arnhem’; the survivors would never forget her. Central to Angel of Arnhem are the experiences of Kate ter Horst during the Battle of Arnhem, which she recorded shortly after the Battle. Her story was first published in 1946 in the bundle Niet tevergeefs (Not in Vain) and later in translation under the title Cloud over Arnhem. One of the wounded at that time, the later general Sir Frank King, provided the 1993 edition with a foreword, which is also included in Angel of Arnhem. Kate’s daughter Sophie Lambrechtsen-ter Horst wrote the introduction to her mother’s memories. The Battle of Arnhem is placed in its historical context by journalist/writer Willem de Bruin, born in Oosterbeek; the situation shortly after the war is covered by a report of Kate’s husband, mr. Jan ter Horst, who was acting mayor at that time. After the war, Kate ter Horst had intensive correspondence with veterans and their families. In their letters they share personal stories about the fateful events, stories about courage and friendship, that still appeal to the imagination and will be passed on from generation to generation.

Tears from Brabant
Auguste van der MolenschotThis is a novel with many themes. It is about Brabant, a land that is presently half in the Netherlands and the other half in Belgium. It is also the story of a little Brabanter boy, born the year Adolf Hitler came to power. The boy wants a good life and that is not so easy because the Catholic Brabanters are kept down by the Calvinist Hollanders. Many other modern themes come by, such as the Second World War, the emancipation (of women but also of the Catholics), the pill and its effects, secularization, wealth. Our young hero goes to Canada where he can make his dream career come true. This is also a singular love story, although it all seems to end in disaster. He then returns to the Netherlands, divorced, impoverished, disillusioned to find a new love, then losing it again and finally turning to a new form of happiness in a world that has changed beyond recognition. For those not so familiar with Dutch history the book starts with a two page short introduction to the 1700 years of Brabant history. Auguste van der Molenschot was born from Belgian parents but he lived his young years in the Dutch province of North Brabant. After a career in the beta sciences he started a new career as a writer, publishing poetry, short stories, essays and now this, his first novel. See also his website www.nostalgiapublishing.nl

In deepest secrecy
Dutch submarine espionage operations from 1968 to 1991‘You need to realise that we are operating as if it were war.’ During the Cold War, six Dutch submarines secretly gathered intelligence about the Soviet Navy. Only a handful of people outside the Royal Netherlands Navy were aware of these operations, as they were not NATO operations. For the first time, In Deepest Secrecy describes these top-secret deployments in detail. On the basis of interviews and archival research, Jaime Karremann reveals how the Dutch submarines followed, photographed and listened to Soviet ships unnoticed, from the freezing Arctic Ocean to shallow waters near Egypt. In Deepest Secrecy is a book about people, boats and, above all, the underwater adventures that have never before been made public. Jaime Karremann is a naval journalist. In the 1990s, he briefly joined the Royal Netherlands Navy and sailed on a frigate. After completing his studies in communication, he then held a civilian position in the Dutch navy for ten years. In Deepest Secrecy is Karremann’s first book. It received great acclaim in The Netherlands.
