De Gevelstenen van Amsterdam, van vóór 1800 Rond 1800 werd in Amsterdam een systeem van huisnummering ingevoerd. Vóór die tijd werd de ligging van een pand omschreven door onder andere te verwijzen naar een gevelsteen. Men woonde in ‘Het Zwarte Schaap’, in ‘De Rode Leeuw’, in ‘Het Melkmeisje’ of in het huis ertegenover of ernaast. Gevelstenen functioneerden als ‘reclameborden’ voor de handel of nering die in het pand werd uitgeoefend, bevatten een toespeling op de naam van de bouwer of verwezen naar de herkomst van de eigenaar. Tegenwoordig worden ze vooral bekeken als uitingen van monumentale kleinkunst en dragers van informatie over cultuur, economie, religie en politiek. Dit fraai uitgegeven boek geeft een compleet overzicht in tekst en beeld van de méér dan 700 gevelstenen aan de Amsterdamse openbare weg die daarmee het grootste museum van Amsterdam vormen. Er wordt ingegaan op de makers, datering, thematiek van de voorstellingen en documentaire waarde. Het boek omvat totaal een 900-tal stenen van vóór het jaar 1800 als rekening wordt gehouden met het register van Amsterdamse gevelstenen in museale en particuliere collecties in en buiten Amsterdam wat tevens is opgenomen. Around 1800, a system of house numbering was introduced in Amsterdam. Before that, the location of a property was described, among other things, by referring to a gable stone. People lived in ‘Het Zwarte Schaap’ (the black sheep), in ‘De Rode Leeuw’ (the red lion), in ‘Het Melkmeisje’ (the milkmaid) or in the house opposite or next to it. Gable stones functioned as ‘advertising signs’ for the trade or business conducted in the building, contained an allusion to the name of the builder or referred to the origin of the owner. Today, they are mostly viewed as expressions of monumental fine art and as exhibits of information about culture, economy, religion and politics. This beautifully published book provides a complete overview in text and image of the more than 700 façade stones on Amsterdam’s public roads, making it the largest museum in Amsterdam. It discusses the makers, dating, themes of the representations and documentary value. The book comprises about 900 gable stones from before 1800, taking into account the register of Amsterdam gable stones in museum and private collections in and outside Amsterdam, which is also included
