Description

'Gospel Notes and More for the Twenty-first Century' examines the contents of the Synoptic Gospels, the Gospel of John, the Acts of the Apostles, the Letters of Paul and other apostles, from the perspective of someone born in the scientific, technological, and multi-cultural world of the twenty-first century. The 'Notes' identify key questions asked by historians who are disinclined to accept explanations that are none-scientific in character. The 'Notes' focus on the real Jesus: the teacher, healer, and charismatic philosopher who lived in Palestine, 2000 years ago, and his core teaching: about existence, personal values, and how one should live with others, including different tribes, and other faiths. This book is useful for anyone preparing a talk on the life and teaching of Jesus, as all the 'Notes' are linked to specific passages in the New Testament, and permit the development of radically different approaches to the those adopted by the author of 'Gospel Notes and More'. The 'Notes' also permit someone with little knowledge of Christianity to identify easily many of the complex issues associated with Christian doctrines. Each section in the 'Notes' is designed as an 'invitation' to the reader to think about what the Bible teaches, and develop wider debate. No 'preaching' is intended.

Harry Houldsworth, BA, MPhil, is a retired principal lecturer in higher education, and a holder of a Teacher's Certificate with Distinction (HE). A member of the Church of England by upbringing, he is now a Methodist. He is a blog-writer for PCN (the Progressive Christianity Network Britain: pcnbritain.org.uk).Harry currently lives in Yorkshire with his wife, Brenda. They have two children and six grandchildren.Harry has a lifetime of interest in the history of the Christian Church and is a critic of the Church for its failure to promote a message that can be understood in today's scientific, technical, and multi-cultural western world. Harry's believes that there is no single, correct way to interpret the 'Good News' in the Christian Bible, which is more about here and now than about the supernatural and life after death. He also believes that Jesus' core teaching is universal in character and crosses the boundaries of time, culture, and creed.
