'Of the many books available on microscopy, my favorite has been Introduction to Optical Microscopy by Jerome Mertz. Now this excellent book is available in an even better second edition.' Joseph W. Goodman, Stanford University, California

'For advanced undergraduates, graduate students, researchers and engineers who want to gain indepth understanding of the principles of optical microscopy or develop their own microscopes, this book is a must-have.' Yang Liu, University of Pittsburgh
'No other book covers microscopy theory as broadly as Mertz's, nor with his consistent focus on its theoretical underpinnings. His book fills a clear pedagogical gap in the literature, and is an excellent resource for professionals as well as students new to the field.' Neil Switz, San Jose State University
'This excellent, perspicuous textbook, based on Fourier and statistical optics, details the derivations of the equations used to mathematize the physics of optical microscopy.' Barry R. Masters, Optics & Photonics News
Jerome Mertz is a Professor of Biomedical Engineering and Director of the Biomicroscopy Laboratory at Boston University. Prior to joining Boston University, he was a CNRS researcher at the Ecole Supérieure de Physique et de Chimie Industrielles in Paris. He is a Fellow of the Optical Society (OSA) and the American Institute for Medical and Biological Engineering (AIMBE).
