Omschrijving

Raman microscopy is now well-established as one of the most powerful and versatile techniques for a diverse range of applications in both research and analytical laboratories. Its unique advantage is its ability to noninvasively characterize chemically complex and spatially inhomogeneous samples with a sub-micron spatial resolution.

“On February 28, 1928, Chandrasekhara Venkata Raman observed his “new radiation”, and the very next day, he made it public. He was knighted the following year and received a Nobel Prize for his discovery in 1930. Such honors reflect the importance of his discovery: nowadays, Raman microscopy (or more generally, Raman spectroscopy) has become an indispensable research method for scientific communities, from physicists to chemists, to biologists, to medics, to criminalists, to geologists, etc. Anyone who begins using Raman microscopes encounters a lot of questions. Which instrument best provides the features that one needs? What options and tools should it have? What wavelength laser should be used for a specific task? How does one work with liquid samples? What are these unexpected lines in the spectrum? All of these questions and more were raised in our group when we first began Raman studies a couple of years ago. Our issues and questions would have been resolved and answered much quicker if we had access to Modern Raman Microscopy: Technique and Practice by Alexander Rzhevskii. In very simple and accessible scientific language, the author explains all of the intricacies and details related to the topic, starting with a description of the physical essence of Raman spectroscopy before characterizing available instruments in the market and guiding novices through various applications and how to decipher their results. The book is very well illustrated and easy to read. In my opinion, it should become a desktop tool available for all beginners, accompanying them on their journey in the remarkable field of Raman Microscopy.”Dr Armen M. Gulian Advanced Physics Laboratory, Institute for Quantum Studies, Chapman University, USA

Alexander Rzhevskii is a Senior Raman application Scientist at Thermo Fisher Scientific. His work is related to the development of scientific and analytical applications of confocal Raman microscopes for users in a variety of disciplines, and he is an expert in Raman and FTIR spectroscopy, microscopy and spectrochemical imaging. He graduated from Belarus State University and received his PhD in Physics and Mathematics from the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus. He has previously worked as a Research Scientist at Worcester Polytechnic Institute, USA, where he developed one of the first UV-Raman experimental setups for in situ study of catalysts and catalytic processes. He has occupied product and application specialist positions at a number of leading providers of solutions and instrumentations for molecular spectroscopy. He is the author of about 50 scientific publications.
