While there have been modern scholarly revisions of individual states, most are decades old, and Michael Fitzgerald's Reconstruction in Alabama is the first comprehensive reinterpretation of that state's history in over a century.
Michael W. Fitzgerald, author of three books including The Union League Movement in the Deep South: Politics and Agricultural Change during Reconstruction and Urban Emancipation: Popular Politics in Reconstruction Mobile, 1860-1890, earned his Ph.D. from the University of California, Los Angeles. He is a professor of history at St. Olaf College in Minnesota.
