The UK’s network of recognised long-distance walking routes is unrivalled anywhere in the world. Each one links parts of existing footpaths into a continuous trail that is then promoted in leaflets, guidebooks and on the internet. And each one has a particular theme – perhaps inspired by a historical figure (Lady Anne’s Way, the John Bunyan Trail) or a familiar landscape feature (The Thames Path, Offa’s Dyke Path).
Over 16 million people walk these routes every year and with a growing emphasis on walking for health and fitness, this number is growing steadily. Leisure walking is also a popular low-cost and ‘green’ activity for weekend breaks or longer holidays close to home.
Finding out about suitable trails can be difficult, but this expanded and updated edition of the popular UK Trailwalker’s Handbook has all the information walkers need to make the right choice.
Compiled by the experts of the Long Distance Walkers Association, this is a comprehensive directory of all the recognized long-distance route across Scotland, England, Wales and Northern Ireland. Combining descriptions by region of hundreds of way marked trails, including the 19 National Trails, and many hundreds more enthusiasts’ routes, with inspirational articles, photographs and overview maps, it covers over 700 routes, more than 40.000 trail miles.
This book will be indispensable both to keen long-distance walkers and to those planning their first backpacking trips – helping them all to have a great time out on the trail.
