An ABC of Art, Botany and CultivationOn the Necessity of Gardening tells the story of the garden as a rich source of inspiration. Over the centuries, artists, writers, poets and thinkers have each described, depicted and designed the garden in different ways. In medieval art, the garden was a reflection of paradise, a place of harmony and fertility, shielded from worldly problems. In the eighteenth century this image tilted: the garden became a symbol of worldly power and politics. The Anthropocene, the era in which man completely dominates nature with disastrous consequences, is forcing us to radically rethink the role we have given nature in recent decades. There is a renewed interest in the theme of the garden among contemporary makers. It is not a romantic desire that drives them, but rather a call for a new awareness of our relationship with the earth. Through many different essays and an extensive abecedarium, On the Necessity of Gardening reflects on the garden as a metaphor for society.

Waarom kunst in het ziekenhuis
Waarom raakt een kunstwerk je als je in het ziekenhuis bent, kan een gedicht je tot tranen roeren, troost muziek of roept een verhaal fijne herinneringen op? Word je een betere dokter als je naar kunst kijkt? Waarom wil een kunstenaar graag een werk voor het ziekenhuis maken? En waarom betrekken wetenschappers kunst in hun onderzoek? Lang niet al die vragen kan samensteller Sabrina Kamstra zelf beantwoorden, daarom vroeg ze patiënten, kunstenaars, curatoren, artsen, wetenschappers en studenten te reageren vanuit hun eigen invalshoek en achtergrond, expertise en ervaring. Kunst in het ziekenhuis wordt ervaren op een schaal van nul tot oneindig. Wat de een onmisbaar vindt, kan een ander totaal niet waarderen of alles daar tussenin. Nachtboot
In Nachtboot worden vragen opgeroepen over de authenticiteit van het individu en zijn omgeving aan de hand van kunst, de stad en (gecultiveerde) natuur. In al haar gedichten doet Barnas een poging iets waarachtigs te beschrijven en te veroorzaken, bewust van het feit dat elke beschrijving een nieuwe laag aan de gemaakte wereld toevoegt. Daardoor functioneert de taal in deze gedichten als instrument, maar ook als stoorzender, en ultieme vorm tegelijk - waarin steeds een onverwachte wending plaatsvindt die alleen kan bestaan in de ruimte van het gedicht. Bij Barnas is elk gedicht een ruimte die de lezer kan betreden. Gedichten over wonen op verschillende plekken, vormexperimenten, soms meertalig maar steeds lyrisch, en klank- en beeldrijk.

The MoMA Plant Collection
'The MoMA Plant Collection' displays the tradition of including plant life in the Museum of Modern Art NY. The book presents 340 photographs and drawings that pay tribute to the pairing of plants with art. What can the placement of greenery next to the works of Mark Rothko, Henri Matisse, and many others tell us about the relationship between culture and nature? A question that Meijer started to investigate in her first artist's book, 'The Plant Collection' (ROMA, 2019), on plants in the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam, and continues at this museum in New York.

Monochrome - Antonis PittasThe publication 'jaune, geel, gelb, yellow. Monochrome' discusses the failure, collapse and historicization of the modernist ideals espoused by Theo van Doesburg, set against the current political backdrop of mass protest. It brings together writers from a variety of fields who reflect on the legacy and failures of modernism from the perspective of their individual backgrounds and expertise. Edited by Lisa Bakker and Eleonoor Jap Sam. With text contributions by (poet) Maria Barnas, (poet) I.K. Bonset, (curator) Laurie Cluitmans, (philosopher) Johan F. Hartle, (architecture historian) Dirk van den Heuvel, (philosopher) Bram Ieven, (sociologist) Bruno Latour, (social anthropologist) Thalia Ostendorf, (director Centraal Museum) Bart Rutten, and (curator) Doris Wintgens. The book is an extension of Pittas’ residency and research at the Van Doesburghuis in 2019, coincided with the yellow vests protest, where Pittas turned the Van Doesburghuis into a performative crime scene. The murder of modernity. Based on this project, the Centraal Museum in Utrecht invited Pittas for a solo exhibition, where he curated works of Theo Van Doesburg and juxtaposed them with his work as a staged scenography of dialogue. The installation looks at the heritage of De Stijl through the current political lenses. Antonis Pittas (1973, Athens) is a visual artist who lives and works in Amsterdam. He is an honorary fellow in the faculty of humanities at the University of Amsterdam, where he conducts research and produces work under the heading Recycling History (Contemporising History/Historicising the Contemporary). His artistic practice focuses on contemporary social and political issues, exploring topics such safety and control, economic crises and acts of resistance, as well as violence and vandalism.

The past inside the present
Art is artificial; it is a fake version of reality. The imagery of art represents, illustrates suggests and provides stillness- it sharpens our perspectives and deepens the experience of reality. Esther Tielemans's work aligns opposites, like the two- and three-dimensional, the abstract and figurative, reality and artificiality. Helen Verhoeven, Schamerkat
In de Hermitage Amsterdam is van 29 maart 2019 tot en met 5 januari 2020 Schamerkat te zien, een presentatie van beeldend kunstenaar Helen Verhoeven. Verhoeven (Leiden, 1974), is de winnaar van de achtste editie van de ABN AMRO Kunstprijs, een stimuleringsprijs voor talent in Nederland. Verhoeven kreeg als onderdeel van de prijs de gelegenheid een jaar te werken aan een presentatie in de Hermitage Amsterdam. Met de installatie Schamerkat refereert Verhoeven aan de tentoonstelling De schatkamer! met topstukken uit de collectie van de Hermitage in Sint-Petersburg. In die collecties ligt de nadruk op schoonheid en creativiteit, wereldwijd en door alle eeuwen heen. Het inspireerde Verhoeven tot het maken van een eigen, zeer diverse microverzameling. Maar met de woordspeling Schamerkat roept ze ook andere associaties op: de titel doet denken aan schaamte en schemer en de donkere kant van het bestaan.

Rokin Fountain Mark Manders

Based in Berlin, Dutch visual artist Helen Verhoeven's works often explore the theme of ceremonial gatherings. The focus of this book is her monumental painting, 'Hoge Raad' ('Supreme Court'), which hangs in that same institution in The Hague. According to the essay by Maria Barnas, "Rarely have I seen anything so theatrical, so time-transcending and majestic, and at the same time so everyday." Tension pervades the work, with the positioning of various figures lending it a theatrical aspect. This book contains a 1:1 reproduction of the painting: each page shows a surface segment, set in the sequence of a mapped grid. Also included is an index of the painting's historical references.
