INTRODUCTION1.1 COLOR MAPPED IMAGESTrue color digital display specifies color information on the screenwith 8 bits for each of the primary components such as red, green, and bluecomprising 24 bits per pixel. Raw image representations usually require alarge amount of storage space and proportionally longer transmission delaysin the case of file uploads or downloads. An alternative for most commonmonitors is to provide 8 bits to specify the color of each pixel, which meansthat only 256 colors can be displayed simultaneously. In order to reach manycustomers, highly compressed palletized images are needed in applicationssuch as game cartridges, geographic information systems, online training, simple animations, and the World Wide Web.
