The former Director of the American School of Classical Studies at Athens presents his archaeological discoveries at Ancient Nemea. Almost 1,800 colour and black and white illustrations, two volumes, large format. Stephen G. Miller (1942-2021) was Professor of Classical Archaeology at the University of California, Berkeley, USA. In 1971 he was named Director of Excavations at Ancient Nemea in the north-eastern Peloponnese, and began the archaeological work there, to which he devoted the rest of his life, just two years later in 1973.
During Stephen Miller’s years in Nemea, he not only made major discoveries such as the stadium where the Nemean Games took place, but also created an archaeological park, constructed and set the displays for an archaeological museum, and began reconstruction of the ancient Temple of Zeus. From 1982 to 1987 he was Director of the American School of Classical Studies at Athens; he founded the Nemea Center for Classical Archaeology at U.C. Berkeley and, in 1994, he founded The Society for the Revival of the Nemean Games.
Stephen G. Miller’s published books include Nemea II: The Early Hellenistic Stadium (University of California Press 2001); The Prytaneion: Its Function and Architectural Form (U.C. Press 1978), Arete: Greek Sports from Ancient Sources (U.C. Press 2004), Ancient Greek Athletics (Yale University Press 2004) and The Berkeley Plato (U.C. Press 2009).
Professor Miller was awarded an honorary doctorate by the University of Athens, decorated by the President of the Hellenic Republic as Commander of the Order of Honour and received Greek citizenship by decree of the President of the Greek Republic in 2005.
