After he obtained his PhD in 2005 from University of Fukui (Japan), he worked as a post-doctoral researcher at National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology (Japan) from 2006 to 2008 and the at New Mexico State University (USA) from 2005 to 2006. From 2008 to 2014 He has promoted as a group leader at Fraunhofer Institute for Applied Solid State Physics (Germany). His current research interests cover design, synthesis, properties and applications of functional materials in the fields of chemistry, materials, and energy. He has published about 200 papers in peer-reviewed journals, editing/ed 1 book series (nanocarbon chemistry, Wiley), 3 books, contributed 11 book chapters, delivered 35 invited talks and 50 oral presentations at international conferences. He is the program member of HasseltDiamond Workshop since 2013 and international conference of diamond and related materials since 2014 as well as Nanodiamond and new carbon (NDNC) in 2016, a guest-editor of 10 journals (e.g., Accounts of Chemicals Research, Small, Carbon, Nanoscale, ACS Applied Materials and Interfaces, Carbon, Electroanalysis, Journal of Electroanalytical Chemistry, Physica Status Solidi A, etc.), and the advisory member of Scientific Reports, diamond and related materials, Nano Research Energy, Materials Lab, and Materials Futures. He has organized 10 symposia at E-MRS Spring Meeting, focusing on synthesis, properties and applications of carbon and related materials.

Dr. Soumen Mandal is working as a Researcher at Cardiff University, UK. He has previously worked at Institut Neel, France between 2008 and 2012. He obtained his PhD from Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur, India in 2009. His current research interest is diamond growth and devices with applications in thermal management, superconductivity, filtration, and next generation communication. He is the co-inventor of diamond based electropositive filters. He has also pioneered chemical mechanical polishing of diamond. He has published about 75 journal articles in refereed journals, contributed 2 book chapters, written 1 review article. He has also delivered 1 plenary talk, 3 invited talks and numerous oral presentations in international conferences.
