Abdulrazak Gurnah (1948) werd geboren op Zanzibar, Tanzania. In 1967 vluchtte hij naar het Verenigd Koninkrijk, waar hij hoogleraar Engelse en postkoloniale literatuur werd aan de universiteit van Kent. Zijn indrukwekkende en gelauwerde oeuvre bestaat uit negen romans, waaronder het in 2022 bij Meulenhoff verschenen Paradijs. In 2021 werd hem de Nobelprijs voor de Literatuur toegekend.
