In de klassieke kerstfilm It’s a wonderful life wenst hoofdpersoon George Bailey dat hij nooit was geboren (‘I wish I’d never been born!’) en in Home Alone hoopt Kevin dat zijn familie zal verdwijnen (‘I wish my family would disappear!’). In Derde kerstdag wenst pubermeisje Marte dat ze tenminsteéén kerstdag alleen in haar joggingbroek met haar telefoon en een bakje patat op de bank kan hangen. Omdat haar ouders zijn gescheiden is ze opeens onderdeel geworden van een enorme extended family. Met kerst betekent dat twee volle dagen ‘de traditie’ vieren met mensen waar ze tegen haar zin mee zit opgescheept. Reikhalzend kijkt ze uit naar de derde kerstdag, die helemaal van haar alleen zal zijn. Maar die dag loopt alles anders dan ze had gedacht…

United States, 1937. In the middle of the Great Depression, 22-year-old photographer John Clark is brought in by the Farm Security Administration to document the calamitous conditions of the Dust Bowl in the central and southern states, in order to bring the farmers' plight to the public eye. When he starts working through his shooting script, however, he finds his subjects to be unreceptive. What good are a couple of photos against relentless and deadly dust storms? The more he shoots, the more John discovers the awful extent of their struggles, coming to question his own role and responsibilities in this tragedy sweeping through the center of the country.
