The family's history is told alongside full colour facsimile reproductions of over 80 previously unpublished manuscripts and artefacts held in the Walter O. Evans Collection. Working together and against a changing backdrop of US slavery, Civil War and Reconstruction, the Douglass family fought for a new 'dawn of freedom'. The book also includes a Foreword by Robert S. Levine and an Afterword by Kim F. Hall. Celeste-Marie Bernier is Professor of Black Studies and Personal Chair in English Literature at the University of Edinburgh. The Future of the Page

The most basic unit of the physical book is the page. It has determined the historical evolution of the book, the types of information communicated, and how the audience accesses that information.
