  1. Reflections on Power and Authority in Early Christian Communities

Reflections on Power and Authority in Early Christian Communities

This edited collection considers the concept of power in the New Testament and early Christian writings.Ronald Clark, Stanley Helton, Anne Moore, and their contributors contend that power in South West Asia and North Africa was not only a desired commodity, but an important tool to navigate the ancient Honor/Shame climate. Bringing together both early career and established scholars with ministry leaders, the essays herein explore the positive uses of power to foster peace and shalom in Early Christian communities. Drawing from sociological, rhetorical, feminist, postcolonial, and empire-critical methodologies, the contributors examine how authority is constructed, displaced, and reimagined through figures such as Jesus, Paul, and individuals in the Roman Empire. The essays herein engage with classical theories (Weber, Arendt, Foucault, Lukes), analyze key biblical texts (Matthew, Luke, Acts, Romans, 1 Corinthians), and reflect on the socio-political context of Roman imperialism. In doing so, the book challenges traditional interpretations and offers fresh insights into leadership, identity, and theological ethics in early Christianity.

  3. Cleomadés and the Marvellous Flying Wooden Horse

Cleomadés and the Marvellous Flying Wooden Horse

A translation into English of Albert Henry's definitive edition of Adenet le Roi's Cleomadés, a story based on a tale from The One Thousand and One Nights. Palace and pageantry, music and feast contribute to the poetic beauty of the tale, in which the hero Cleomadés and his sweetheart Clarmondine share love of an intensity evoking that of Layla and Majnun, of Isolde and Tristan, of Guinevere and Lancelot. When adventures with a mechanical flying horse separate them disastrously, the lovers undertake epic journeys and devise ingenious ruses to effect their eventual union. In medieval French tradition, their ardour is the consuming passion of the narrative. However, Cleomadés is replete with material on the status of women, of the disabled, of the insane, of religious toleration, of violent behaviour, of duty toward parents. Produced in Paris in 1285 under the patronage of Marie de Brabant, queen of France and daughter of Adenet's first patron, Cleomadés crowns its author's illustrious career.

  9. Evaluating Business and Industry Training

    Evaluating Business and Industry Training

In the abstract, training is seen as valuable by most people in business and industry. However, in the rush of providing training programs "on time" and "within budget," evaluation of training is frequently left behind as a "nice to have" addition, if practical. In addition, the training function itself is left with the dilemma of proving its worth to management without a substantive history of evaluation. This book is designed to provide managers, educators, and trainers alike the opportunity to explore the issues and benefits of evaluating business and industry training. The purpose is to motivate more effective decisions for training investments based on information about the value of training in attaining business goals. Without evaluation, the value of specific training efforts cannot be adequately measured, the value of training investments overall cannot be fully assessed, and the contributions of the training function to the corporation's goals cannot be duly recognized. Articles are grouped into three sections, althou~h many themes appear across sections. The first section estabhshes the context of training evaluation in a business organization. The second section emphasizes evaluation of training products and services; and the third section discusses costs and benefits of evaluation, and communication and use of evaluation results in decision making. In Section I, the context of training evaluation is established from a variety of perspectives. First, training and trainin~ evaluation are discussed in the context of corporate strateglc goals.

    The Practice-Based Educator

Development of high quality health professionals depends upon high quality learning experiences in the practice environment. This is acknowledged by increased emphasis on quality assurance in practice-based professional education, and in calls for accreditation of practice-based educators. Inevitably this has major benefits for patient/client populations utilising healthcare services. The Practice-Based Educator - A reflective tool for CPD and accreditation builds on an earlier book, The Clinical Educator - Role Development by Ann Moore, Ros Hilton, Jane Morris, Lynne Caladine and Helen Bristow. Published in 1997, it proved to be a valuable resource for practice-based educators in the Allied Health Professions. This new book updates the background and context of practice-based education. It includes an extensive section on techniques and methods as well as a troubleshooting section. This uses vignettes to explore some reasons why things might go wrong in practice-based learning interactions, and sugests ideas for dealing with problems such as: learner alienation in the practice-based learning environment match and mismatch between learner stage of development and educator approach fear and failure in the practice-based learning enviroment the 'blocked learning cycle' At the end of each chapter, proformas linked to specific learning outcomes are provided. These draw on readers' application of reflective activities in the chapter to their own practice as educators and learners. Learning in each chapter can be linked to a set of generic outcomes for accreditation. In this way readers can build a portfolio of evidence to use in any subsequent application for formal accreditation. This practical text will provide an easily accessible resource for health professionals involved in practice-based education at a variety of levels.
