A due o trecento metri dalla spiaggia di San Blas, in Messico, si trova una strana roccia bianca che sorge dall'oceano come un miraggio. Per i nativi è il luogo di origine del mondo. Immobile e silenziosa, nel corso dei secoli la roccia è stata testimone di spietate missioni di conquista, deportazioni verso i campi dello Yucatán, vagabondaggi psichedelici e pellegrinaggi laici come quello della scrittrice inglese che inaugura il racconto. È tornata alla roccia bianca per ringraziare di una preghiera esaudita. Ma davanti all'oceano si rende conto che le sue ragioni non sono così limpide e che anche lei è arrivata fin laggiù per rubare qualcosa. È l'inizio del 2020 e, mentre dall'Europa arrivano notizie allarmanti sul dilagare di un nuovo coronavirus, un gruppo di sconosciuti attraversa il Messico a bordo di un pulmino soffocante. La meta? San Blas, una sonnolenta cittadina sul Pacifico, e più in particolare la roccia bianca da cui, secondo i nativi di quelle zone, ha avuto origine il mondo. Fa parte del gruppo anche una scrittrice senza nome. È lì per rendere grazie per la nascita della figlia, ma anche per fare ricerche per un libro. A quella roccia dal profilo mutevole sono infatti legate tante storie poco note ma degne di essere raccontate. Nel 1969 un cantante rock si rifugia all'insaputa di tutti in un albergo lì vicino, a metà strada tra la giungla e l'oceano. Vuole sfuggire a una fama ormai ingombrante, ma i suoi demoni e le sue dipendenze lo seguono. San Blas è, nel 1907, anche l'approdo di due ragazzine yoeme. La loro, però, non è una scelta volontaria: sono state portate lì con la forza e, ad attenderle dopo una sfiancante marcia sulle montagne, non c'è che il lavoro forzato nei campi dello Yucatán. Una sorte tanto tragica quanto comune, un genocidio che affonda le radici nel colonialismo. E San Blas, a fine Settecento, è proprio un avamposto delle forze di conquista spagnole e il punto di partenza di un'ambiziosa missione esplorativa. Poco prima di levare gli ormeggi, però, uno degli ufficiali dei tre vascelli pronti a risalire la costa sembra impazzire. Colpa del caldo e della stanchezza oppure, magari per maggiore lungimiranza e sensibilità, ha visto qualcosa che agli altri sfuggiva o non interessava? Mescolando realtà e fantasia, vicende personali e temi universali, Anna Hope crea quattro storie disposte a matrioska che, oltre alla roccia del titolo, hanno al cuore il complesso groviglio di bene e male che muove e condiziona gli esseri umani.
