Dopo aver esordito nel 1986 con il saggio Eros the Bittersweet, nel 1992 Anne Carson pubblica Short Talks, una serie di prose liriche. È però con Glass, Irony and God (Vetro, Ironia e Dio, Crocetti 2023) e Plainwater: Essays and Poetry, usciti entrambi negli Stati Uniti nel 1995, che la sua scrittura si fa più apertamente poetica. Essays and Poetry, il sottotitolo di Plainwater, ne chiarisce la natura ibrida. È, infatti, un libro che contiene saggi e poesie, che supera i confini del linguaggio e dei generi letterari. È stato detto che questa scrittura ha il ritmo della poesia e la concretezza della prosa, e con il suo stile originale, con il suo potere d'invenzione apparentemente infinito, Carson fa dialogare la tradizione classica e quella moderna.
