Den Where I Cry

Thirteen years ago, I led a very dark and disturbing life, and I was suffering severely with mental illness and drug addiction. During this dark period of my life, I isolated myself from my family, friends and the world in my little den on Long Island. While I was in my "Den of Darkness" I did something else besides drugs and drinking, I sat at my desk and wrote poetry. Hundreds and hundreds of poems that stored in my desk top computer. These poems were not written in a proper state of mind. Unfortunately, because of the mind set I was in at that time, my poetry is very dark and disturbing, but when I think about it -- isn't Batman dark and disturbing? These poems describe the way I felt when I lived in my "Den Where I Cried."

The Fight

As a young child, Anthony Daniels dreamed of becoming a professional hockey player. He was on track to becoming a professional athlete, till one day a freak car accident ended his hockey career. He was accepted to Fordham University to study business and pre-law, when Anthony developed an itch starting at his toes that quickly moved up his body. Following several tests, Anthony was diagnosed with Hodgkin's Lymphoma. Despite his prognosis, Anthony fought his cancer into remission twice within two years. Anthony was born an athlete, not competing was unacceptable for him. Anthony was introduced to boxing. Something he never thought he could do while battling cancer. Not soon after, Anthony found himself at a boxing gym, training as an athlete again. When his cancer returned for the third and even fourth time, Anthony never gave up. Following high doses of chemotherapy and radiation treatment that would have anyone in bed for days, Anthony would train for several hours at the boxing gym. In 2018, while battling Hodgkin's Lymphoma for the fifth time, Anthony was also diagnosed with brain cancer. His credit of surviving cancer over five times was based on his strength and endurance. There is no cure for Anthony, and he is ready to tell people his story. In The Fight, Anthony's message is clear; make the decision to never give up, choose to be strong, and find your purpose despite your circumstances.

Den of Dark Shadows

Lonely, depressed, confused, and spending hours a day contemplating suicide in my little eight-by-eight den. At the age of forty-two, this is what my life has become. At the age of thirty, I had a nervous breakdown and overdosed on several bottles of medication. The next day my wife found me unconscious on the floor, and I was rushed to the emergency room, after which I spent several days in the hospital. Then I was taken to a mental institution. During my month-long stay there, I was diagnosed with a bipolar disorder. The rest, they say, is history; but in my case, the rest is misery.
