Three Sisters
The sisters Olga, Masha, and Irina live with their brother Andrey in a provincial Russian town, and plan to return to Moscow, where they grew up, as soon as they're able. Olga doesn't want to continue working at the school where she's a teacher and occasional headmaster; Masha is disillusioned in her marriage; Irina hopes to find her true love; and Andrey shows promise of becoming a professor. Also stationed in their town is a battery of soldiers that provide them with a social life. When Andrey falls in love with Natasha, their hopes for change are dashed, bit by bit.First performed in 1901 at the Moscow Art Theatre, Three Sisters is considered one of Chekhov's best plays. While critical reception at the time was mixed, the show was popular enough to become a part of the company's repertoire, and is still commonly staged and adapted today.

Letters Of Anton Chekhov To His Family And Friends
Letters of Anton Chekhov to his family and friends presents an intimate portrait of a writer revealed through personal correspondence rather than formal literary creation. The collection traces emotional growth, creative uncertainty, and gradual recognition, offering insight into daily struggles alongside moments of humor and quiet reflection. Family bonds and friendships form the emotional core, showing affection, encouragement, and concern expressed with warmth and restraint. Ordinary experiences such as travel, work, illness, and financial pressure become reflections on patience, responsibility, and inner balance. The letters reveal a voice that values sincerity over display, blending wit with introspection to capture the tension between ambition and humility. Observations of human behavior emerge naturally, suggesting a deep awareness of character and moral nuance. Rather than presenting public success, the writing emphasizes endurance, compassion, and personal honesty. Through these exchanges, the book portrays a life shaped by empathy, discipline, and attentive observation, allowing readers to encounter creativity as a lived experience grounded in everyday relationships and thoughtful self examination.

The Duel
The Duel is one of Chekhov's longest works, skirting the edge between novel and novella. Like many of Chekhov's works, it was first published as a serial.Laevsky is a womanizing drunkard, a slave to life's vices. His wantonness clashes with the moralistic zoologist Von Koren, who grows to despise Laevsky. Their mutual enmity culminates in a duel-though neither they, nor their friends, really want it to happen.

The Duel (Russian: ¿¿¿¿¿, romanized: Duél') is a novella by Anton Chekhov originally published in 1891; it was adapted for the screen by Iosif Kheifits in 1973 (as The Bad Good Man, starring Vladimir Vysotsky) and by Dover Kosashvili in 2010 (as The Duel).Publication"The Duel" was first serialized in Aleksey Suvorin's newspaper Novoye Vremya from October-November 1891, after which Suvorin edited the novella and published it as a separate edition. The book enjoyed nine re-issues during the 1890s. Chekhov included "The Duel" in Volume 6 of his Collected Works, published by Adolf Marks in 1899-1901.[1][2]BackgroundChekhov started writing the novella in January 1891. According to Mikhail Chekhov, while working upon it Chekhov regularly met with the zoologist and writer Vladimir Wagner. The two had lengthy discussions, one of which was on the subject of the then-popular concept of "the right of the strong one", which formed the basis of the philosophy of the main character of the work, Nikolai Vassilitch von Koren, for whom Wagner apparently served as a template.

Adapting Chekhov in the 21st Century
Rediscover Anton Chekhov's acclaimed works in radical, creative new ways. The Seagull, Uncle Vanya, Three Sisters and The Cherry Orchard: Chekhov's major plays have been perennially popular since the late 19th century. But, as a new wave of diverse, contemporary theatre makers engage with his legendary works, these classics are transformed and reimagined by bold new approaches. In doing so, Chekhov's original drama is not only explored but reanimated and interrogated in revolutionary ways. From an ambitious one-person production, to a dance-poetry-play hybrid, to an intergalactic voyage, Chekhov's work has never been so expansive or his experimental spirit so realised. This collection draws together seven contrasting adaptations, ranging from the formally inventive, to those that relocate the originals in times and places that expose forces of privilege and power. With an introduction by Frances Babbage which equips the reader with key methods of conceptualising dramatic adaptation, as well as providing a critical overview of the long history of Chekhovian rewritings for the stage, Adapting Chekhov in the 21st Century is a much-needed tool for adaptation and theatre studies students and Chekhov enthusiasts alike.
