Transnational Radio Monitoring in the Twentieth Century

Radio monitoring is an important feature of broadcasting history and monitoring reports form a treasure trove for historians. This volume offers six case studies that provide new insights on the importance of radio monitoring during the Second World War and the Cold War. Radio broadcasting is not only about transmission, but also about listening. From the start of the medium's history, radio organisations institutionalised services to monitor the broadcasts of stations from all over the globe and write daily reports about them. This act of listening provided valuable information about the situation in various parts of the world or insights into the communication strategies of broadcasters. As a result, collections of monitoring reports are bulky, containing countless documents which form a treasure trove for radio historians. At the same time researchers need to be aware that these sources are far from neutral: monitoring services often serve clear geopolitical objectives in context of conflict situations. This volume explores the rich history of radio monitoring during the Second World War and the Cold War. As such it offers original case studies that shed light on previously unknown radio histories. Moreover, all the authors reflect on the use of monitoring reports as a historical source and as such provide methodological guidelines. The Universal Declaration of Human Rights at 75 and beyond: historical, contempary, and future perspectives

Few documents have shaped global understanding of human rights as profoundly as the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR). More than seventy-five years after its adoption, its principles remain vital and enduring, providing a blueprint for justice, equality, and human dignity. Yet today, these ideals face unprecedented challenges. Deadly conflicts rage across the globe, core human rights institutions are under intense political and financial pressure, authoritarianism is on the rise, civic space is shrinking, xenophobia spreads, and the use of force is increasingly normalised. In response to these urgent realities, leading scholars and academics from the Netherlands, Greece, and Poland joined forces through the Human Rights 75 Initiative to reflect on the UDHR’s historical foundations, its contemporary significance, and the challenges that lie ahead. This initiative was a spin-off of a lecture series organized by the University of Groningen. The authors examine how human rights have evolved and are evolving in the face of social, political, and technological change, addressing issues such as digital governance, freedom of expression, media protection, artificial intelligence, and neurorights. South African Black Generation Y Students' Perceptions

The use of celebrity endorsers is a popular marketing strategy in many countries. Typically, many marketers believe that using celebrities is a viable marketing strategy for attracting customers, increasing market share and improving sales for their market offerings. The celebrity endorsement strategy using local celebrities is increasing in South Africa. Many South African marketers are now using popular local black celebrities in an attempt to attract the prosperous black emerging middle class, known as Black Diamonds. Black Generation Y students offer great promise to marketers in the South African market as their tertiary education is likely to lead to higher future earning potential and subsequent entry into the already prosperous black emerging middle class segment. Given the increased use of local black celebrities and the market potential of the black Generation Y cohort in South Africa, it is important to investigate whether this marketing strategy may be effective when used in this segment. Celebrity endorsement may work effectively if the correct celebrity is chosen to promote a product but may have costly results if an inappropriate celebrity is chosen.

Imagining Communities

In his groundbreaking Imagined Communities, first published in 1983, Benedict Anderson argued that members of a community experience a deep, horizontal camaraderie. Despite being strangers, members feel connected in a web of imagined experiences., Yet while Anderson's insights have been hugely influential, they remain abstract: it is difficult to imagine imagined communities. How do they evolve and how is membership constructed cognitively, socially and culturally? How do individuals and communities contribute to group formation through the act of imagining?
