Manieren van levend zijn bevat zes filosofische novelles die uiteenlopen van een verhaal over wolvensporen volgen in een verlaten Frans skigebied tot een onderzoek naar het beest in de mens aan de hand van Spinoza's Ethica. Het verbindende element tussen de teksten is de gedachte dat de wijze waarop we andere levende wezens waarnemen en begrijpen, heeft bijgedragen aan de huidige ecologische crisis. Voor Morizot is het dan ook cruciaal om zijn filosofische inzichten te baseren op veldonderzoek en op ontmoetingen met andere levende wezens. Hij richt zich op de relaties tussen soorten, en stelt zich op als een diplomaat van de onderlinge afhankelijkheid door zich verre te houden van ‘het dierlijke’ opgevat als inferieure beestachtigheid dan wel superieure zuiverheid. Baptiste Morizot (1983) is lector in de filosofie aan de universiteit van Aix-Marseille, en schrijft boeken waarin de verwevenheid van de mens met andere levende wezens centraal staat. Met Les Diplomates (2016) verwierf hij bekendheid onder een breed publiek. Vervolgens publiceerde hij onder andere Sur la piste animale (2018), Raviver les braises du vivant (2020, Nederlandse editie Het levende laten opvlammen, 2022) en Rendre l'eau à la terre (2024).
