Carlos Fuentes (1928-2012) was een van de grootste schrijvers van Mexico en heeft talloze prijzen gewonnen waaronder de Cervantes Prijs en de Rómulo Gallegos Prijs. Behalve auteur van bekende romans als Alle gelukkige gezinnen en De dood van Artemio Cruz werkte Fuentes als hoogleraar aan Harvard en ambassadeur in Parijs.
