International Law and the Reconceptualization of Territorial Boundaries
This book critically analyzes the state-based regime of international law, eliciting its colonial and decolonial origins and proposing a new sub-regional basis for dealing with contemporary global challenges. Since 1648, public international law has taken many steps to maintain peace and establish a just order. The State is deemed central to each of these efforts. Yet modern challenges, such as environmental mitigation, mass migration, and the need to stimulate economic growth, overwhelm the State. Could a regional approach to these questions, achieved in conjunction with strong sub-national local governance, establish a more effective framework for systemic change? Drawing on a history of colonization and decolonization, while scrutinizing decisions made about the imposition of the State on the basis of colonial boundaries, this multidisciplinary work analyses why current challenges are unlikely to be adequately addressed through existing governance structures. In response, it advocates for a sub-regional, transnational approach, drawing on analyses of pre-colonial shared histories and contemporary population ethnographies unfettered by hegemonic boundary drawing. The book argues that collaboration across such frontiers in the face of climate and other challenges may offer more feasible approaches to the pursuit of peace than the unquestioned maintenance of state-based structures of inherited privilege. This book will appeal to scholars and others with interests in international law, international relations, and international politics, as well as in the history and politics of colonialism.

Nuclear Corrosion Modeling
Corrosion in nuclear power plants cause reductions in efficiency and increases in deposit build-up on plant surfaces, making for expensive maintentance and potential radiological health hazards. This book guides studies to predict and minimize corrosion, thus making nuclear power safer and more cost effective. Too often, reliance on empirical models and on-site testing of existing plants makes study and prediction of corrosive effects in nuclear reactors into a pricey and lengthy process. Introducing the experimental procedures, set up, sample preparation and computer modeling suggested in this book will save precious time and resources in a field where the significant time and expense to get and keep plants on-line are two of the chief concerns preventing broader commerical viability.

Portuguese Landscape Architecture Education, Heritage and Research
In 2022, the Landscape Architecture course in Portugal celebrated 80 years of existence. This edited collection, Portuguese Landscape Architecture Education, Heritage and Research, commemorates this important milestone by bringing together some of the most respected names in Portuguese Landscape Architecture. Although the book's content is targeted at the assessment of the Portuguese history and influence, the themes under analysis are all-encompassing within the major fields, namely pedagogy; heritage; theory and methods; and design and landscape planning and management. The book seeks to address several research questions, including How has Landscape Architecture evolved in Portugal and how has it been revealed in the different disciplinary areas and educational institutions, particularly considering the great challenges of today? What legacy did Cabral, Sousa da Câmara and the first generation of landscape architects leave us that can be identified in the theory and practice of research projects, recent or ongoing, carried out by Portuguese landscape architects? How has the education, research and practice of Landscape Architecture in Portugal been influenced or reflected by the exchange of knowledge with other countries? This book will be of interest to researchers and students, as it encompasses an extensive contribution to the field of Landscape Architecture studies, aiming to impact both on the theory and practice of the discipline. A Sicilian Gal Growing Up in the Valley of My Heart's Delight
Tamara Castello grew up in the Santa Clara Valley, California, once known as the "Valley of the Heart's Delight." She grew up right in the heart of Willow Glen surrounded by many Italian Americans. Willow Glen, a suburb of San Jose is an area with rich soil and the weather was very similar to the mild Mediterranean climate in Sicily, Italy. That was what attracted her Sicilian ancestors to come to America and live the "American Dream." The beauty of white blossoms on the fruit trees and the smell of the fresh fruit drying also attracted more Italians to come to Santa Clara Valley. The population in 1950 was 95,280 people. She was born in 1957. The next census was in 1960 with a population of 204,196 people, which more than doubled. Now San Jose has reached one million people in population surrounded by beautiful mountains in a lush valley. It was all about the perfect climate in San Jose. While she was growing up in the 1960s, San Jose was known as an agricultural town with an abundance of fruit and nut orchards. The silicon computer chip was invented there; thus, the name "Silicon Valley" is what they call it today. With all the fruit and nut orchards gone, it is now home to the high-tech industries. The memories of growing up in what is now the Silicon Valley is what inspired Tamara to write her memoir. She moved out of the valley to retire in the California desert.

Beauty in the Western Canon
Dadaist works, such as Duchamp's ready mades, famously challenge the connection between art and the aesthetic by presenting objects of little or no aesthetic interest, such as urinals, snow shovels, and bicycles, as art. From impressionist paintings to unmade beds exhibited in galleries, this raises enduring questions: Are these objects art simply because an artist declares them so, or because they are placed in a gallery? Or is there something more fundamental that defines art? Why do some objects, installations, buildings, or essays qualify as art, while others do not? Tracing the evolution of the concept of art from the ancient Greek notion of tekhne, meaning art, craft, technique, or skill, this monograph explores the theoretical and technical dimensions that underpin artistic creation. It interrogates whether art must serve a function, whether it exists for its own sake, or whether it reflects life or even compels life to imitate art. At its core, this book examines the notion of beauty in Western thought, from its divine origins to its contemporary crisis. In an age of digital and virtual realities, has beauty lost its relevance? Do today's artists still engage with beauty, or has it been displaced by other concerns? Organized around these pressing questions, this work offers a critical exploration of beauty's place in the condition of contemporaneity.

Decentering the Nineteenth Century Novel
This groundbreaking monograph offers readers a profound exploration of nineteenth-century literature. Rather than presenting these works as a mere succession of literary movements, the author weaves romanticism, realism, gothic, and decadence into a coherent tapestry united by a singular focus: the enigmatic nature of human decision-making. The text delves beyond plot mechanics to examine the psychological underpinnings of iconic characters like Anna Karenina, Isabel Archer, and Raskolnikov. Through meticulous analysis, it addresses fundamental questions that continue to resonate: Why do people act against their own interests? Why do we harm those we love? What drives human desire, and how does it sometimes lead to destruction? This volume deliberately shifts focus from the traditional emphasis on societal dynamics and urban development to concentrate on the obsessions of the human soul. The text approaches each literary work as a monument containing secrets, offering readers a fresh interpretive framework that balances narrative events with their deeper significance. This will be essential reading for scholars of nineteenth-century literature, psychoanalytic criticism, and anyone fascinated by the dark complexities of human motivation that transcend historical context and continue to define the human condition.

Uncitral Model Laws on Digital Trade
This book provides a detailed analysis of two UNCITRAL texts: the Model Law on Electronic Transferable Records (MLETR) and the Model Law on the Use and Cross-border Recognition of Identity Management and Trust Services (MLIT). The MLETR is the legal tool that enables the use of trade documents such as bills of lading and promissory notes in electronic form. The book discusses core MLETR provisions such as those on scope of application, functional equivalence, and reliability standards. It illustrates national variations in enactment techniques and substantive content, including in France, Singapore, and the United Kingdom. The MLIT provides the legal framework to manage identity management and trust services, including electronic signatures. The book explains the different approaches to giving legal recognition and effect to identity management and trust services, both domestically and across borders. It discusses the legal framework to accommodate functions and needs of identity management, describes trust services against the background of pre-existing UNCITRAL texts, and takes into account the revised EU eIDAS Regulation. Providing an article-by-article commentary as well as an overview of implementation trends, the book is a fundamental resource for commercial, maritime and banking lawyers, digital economy policymakers, legislative drafters, supply chain management and paperless trade specialists, and for anyone interested in understanding the legal aspects of the transition from documents to data in trade.
