Charles Bukowski is one of America's best-known contemporary writers of poetry and prose and, many would claim, its most influential and imitated poet. He was born in 1920 in Andernach, Germany, to an American soldier father and a German mother, and brought to the United States at the age of two. He was raised in Los Angeles and lived there for over fifty years. He died in San Pedro, California, on March 9, 1994, at the age of seventy-three, shortly after completing his last novel, Pulp.

Un diario di viaggio, dunque, ma soprattutto una serie di aneddoti, di storie di vita, in cui il grande scrittore continua a sorprenderci con le sue genuine quanto maledette rivelazioni sul senso dell'esistenza, la morte e l'amicizia. Il viaggio si srotola tra reading, presentazioni televisive e cene nel corso delle quali Bukowski non fa proprio nulla per conquistare il suo pubblico. Ma in questo sta la sua forza e originalità: presentarsi al mondo semplicemente per quello che è, senza nascondere le proprie umane debolezze, scrivendo alla fine un inedito viaggio sentimentale, composto di poesie e appunti di vita vera.
