Der als "Prinz der Impressionisten" gefeierte Claude Monet (1840-1926) brach mit althergebrachten Konventionen und Erwartungshaltungen, indem er in seinen Bildern nicht nur die Realität, sondern auch den Akt der Wahrnehmung an sich festhalten wollte.
