ATELIER KEMPE THILL was founded in Rotterdam in 2000 by German architects André Kempe (*1968) and Oliver Thill (*1970), who are both active in research and teaching, currently holding professorships at the Leibniz University Hannover. Setting out with designs for collective housing and small public building commissions, the practice portfolio has developed to include large renovation, infrastructure and urban design projects. Today, the office has more than thirty employees.

Van Gerrewey explores a myriad [of] aspects of the distinctive undulating building completed in 2010 (the same year Kazuyo Sejima and Ryue Nishizawa won the Pritzker Prize): from the campus's origins and the building's programmatic requirements, to situating the project's flowing spaces within other open-plan buildings and how the undulating slabs of concrete are structured."

Naast de ‘traditionele’ overzichtswerken, recensies in vakbladen en kritiek in tijdschriften, spelen in toenemende mate ook andere media een rol, zoals weekendbijlagen van kranten, sociale media, nieuwsbrieven, politieke arena’s, en fora waar de architectuur gecultiveerd wordt. Dit nummer van OASE onderzoekt hoe verschuivende appreciaties, om zeer uiteenlopende redenen, kunnen functioneren als productief misverstand, en als hefboom om de architectuurkritiek een stap vooruit te helpen en het denken over architectuur los te wrikken uit elke mogelijke canon of uit het keurslijf van veronderstelde zekerheden. >English< The history of architecture can not only be read as an accumulation of buildings and designs, but also as a pendulum movement between the appreciation and the rejection of projects, oeuvres and positions, driven by varying arguments. In addition to conventional general publications, reviews in professional journals and criticism in magazines, other media increasingly play a part, such as weekend supplements of newspapers, social media, newsletters, political arenas and forums that cultivate architecture. Oeuvres and projects are subject to trends, to waves of appreciation by audiences and critics. As a result, it is sometimes unclear what it is that makes architecture good, less good or bad. This issue of OASE investigates how changing appreciations, for a wide variety of reasons, can act as productive misunderstandings and as levers that can take architecture criticism a step forward and help architecture reflection to break free from any given canon or from its straitjacket of assumed certainties.

Christophe Van Gerrewey is assistant professor in architectural theory at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Lausanne. He is a member of the editorial teams of the art critic magazine De Witte Raaf and the architecture magazine OASE. He has compiled a collection of critical essays on the work of OMA/Rem Koolhaas entitled OMA/Rem Koolhaas: A Critical Reader from Delirious New York to S,M,L,XL and has published three novels and a collection of literary essays in Dutch.

For English please see below De opleiding tot architect lijkt vandaag moeilijker dan ooit te organiseren. Na mei 1968 werd het onderwijs radicaal gedemocratiseerd, of dat was althans de bedoeling. De Bolognaverklaring in 1999 veranderde echter ook de structuur van architectuurscholen indringend. Bestaat er vandaag nog een traditie die studenten kan worden aangereikt? Over welke vaardigheden moeten ze beschikken vooraleer ze zich op de beroepsmarkt begeven? En wat met kennis die misschien niet zozeer nuttig is, maar wel noodzakelijk om de cultuur en de geschiedenis van de architectuur ten volle te begrijpen? Is een architect een kritische intellectueel of eerder een succesvolle ondernemer? In dit nummer van OASE worden Europese scholen en docenten van de jaren zestig tot vandaag tegen het licht gehouden. Ligt er binnen de onderwijsstudio’s een nadruk op een bepaalde architectuur? Wat is de relatie tussen ontwerp en geschiedenis? Welke invloed oefenen beroemde architecten uit als ze les gaan geven? Het nummer besluit met drie gesprekken over architectuuronderwijs vandaag, en over de uitdagingen voor de toekomst. -- Architectural training seems to be more difficult to organize than ever before. After May 1968, education was radically democratized, or at least that was the intention. However, the 1999 Bologna Declaration radically changed the structure of architecture schools as well. Is there any tradition left to hand down to students? What skills do they need before they can enter the job market? And how about the kind of knowledge that may not be practical, but is nevertheless necessary to fully understand the culture and history of architecture? Is the architect a critical intellectual or rather a successful entrepreneur? This issue of OASE examines European schools and teachers from the 1960s to the present day. Do educational institutes emphasize a particular architecture? What is the relationship between design and history? What is the impact of famous architects who teach? The issue concludes with three interviews about the architecture schools of today and about the challenges for the future.
