Museologia radicale. Ovvero, cos'è 'contemporaneo' nei musei d'arte contemporanea?
L'avvenire del museo pubblico non è mai parso più a rischio: più che rappresentare gli interessi diversificati della collettività, nella maggior parte dei casi esso è ridotto a veicolo di promozione per eventi blockbuster e di tutela dei privilegi dei privati, dando vita a templi dello svago e dell'evasione incapaci di cogliere l'attuale momento storico nella sua globalità. Salvo qualche felice quanto rara eccezione. In questo breve saggio, Claire Bishop riporta le esperienze di tre istituzioni europee di arte contemporanea - il Van Abbemuseum di Eindhoven, il Museo Nacional Reina Sofía di Madrid e il MSUM di Lubiana - che, per far fronte ai tagli dei fondi pubblici dettati dalle misure di austerity, hanno fatto di necessità virtù mettendo a punto brillanti alternative al mantra dominante del "più grande è più bello, e se possibile anche più redditizio". Attraverso illuminate politiche di acquisizione e allestimento delle proprie collezioni permanenti, questi musei si sono caratterizzati come realtà votate alla sperimentazione, capaci di utilizzare le proprie risorse per imbastire un discorso critico e generare uno sguardo politico sull'attuale fase storica. Museologia radicale, riprendendo il filo di un acceso dibattito internazionale, delinea un manifesto per una nuova concezione del contemporaneo, da intendere come pratica e non come mera periodizzazione, a favore di una rilettura del ruolo del museo come istituzione in grado di preservare l'eredità culturale e allo stesso tempo offrire una voce critica che possa interrogare il presente e contribuire a realizzare un futuro diverso.

Artificial Hells
The award-winning, highly acclaimed Artificial Hells is the first historical and theoretical overview of socially engaged participatory art, known in the US as "social practice." In recent decades, the art gallery and the museum have become a place for participatory art, where an audience is encouraged to take part in the artwork. This has been heralded as a revolutionary practise that can promote new emancipatory social relations. What was it is really? In this fully updated edition, Claire Bishop follows the trajectory of twentieth-century art and examines key moments in the development of a participatory aesthetic. This itinerary takes in Futurism and Dada; the Situationist International; Happenings in Eastern Europe, Argentina and Paris; the 1970s Community Arts Movement; and the Artists Placement Group. It concludes with a discussion of long-term educational projects by contemporary artists such as Thomas Hirschhorn, Tania Bruguera, Pawel Althamer and Paul Chan.Bishop challenges the political and aesthetic ambitions of participatory art this practise. She not only scrutinizes the emancipatory claims, but also provides an alternative to the ethical (rather than artistic) criteria invited by such artworks. In response Artificial Hells calls for a less prescriptive approach to art and politics, and for more compelling, troubling and bolder forms of participatory art and criticism.
