A Journal of the Plague Year
The Plague is a disease that has a long and tragic history alongside humanity's development of tightly-packed cities. A Journal of a Plague Year is a first-person narrative account of London's last great plague outbreak in 1665, which killed an estimated 100,000 people in just 18 months.Though written in the first-person perspective by Daniel Defoe, he was only 5 years old during the outbreak. The initials at the end of the work, "H. F.," suggest that Journal is based on accounts of Defoe's uncle, Henry Foe.This highly readable short novel is fascinating not just as a historical account, but in its description of how people reacted to a deadly disease that they understood to be contagious, but yet had no cure for. Defoe derides quack doctors who killed more than they saved, and then themselves succumbed to plague. He tells of people turning to religion; of people driven mad by the death around them and raving in the streets; of people fleeing to the country, and of others barricading themselves in their homes. The ways people reacted in 1665 could be the very same ways people might have reacted today to a mysterious, deadly, and highly contagious outbreak.

The Life and Adventures of Robinson Crusoe
Robinson Crusoe is one of the most popular books ever written in the English language, published in innumerable editions and translated into almost every language of the world, not to mention the many versions created in film, television and even radio. First published in 1719, it can also claim to be one of the first novels ever written in English.Written in the form of an autobiography, it describes the life of the eponymous narrator Robinson Crusoe. These, it turns out, are the native inhabitants of the mainland, who visit the island only occasionally. To Crusoe's horror, he discovers that these people practice cannibalism. He rescues one of their prisoners, who becomes his servant (or "man") Friday, named for the day of the week on which he rescued him, and together, their adventures continue.

Moll Flanders
After the success of Robinson Crusoe and its follow-ups, Daniel Defoe published Moll Flanders in 1722. It's an episodic, picaresque novel that recounts Moll's long life of misadventures. Dominábame el deseo de hacerme marino y de correr por los mares las más diversas aventuras. Esto iba contra la voluntad de mi padre, que me había amonestado repetidas veces, así como contra los cariñosos consejos y súplicas de mi madre. Pero todo hacía parecer que un secreto destino me arrastraba hacia una vida llena de peligros. Después de una reflexión madura y concienzuda, decidí construir una segunda fortificación en forma de semicírculo, a cierta distancia de la muralla en el mismo lugar donde, hacía doce años, había plantado una doble hilera de árboles, de la cual ya he hecho mención. Había plantado estos árboles tan próximos unos a otros, que si agregaba unas cuantas estacas entre ellos, formaría una muralla mucho más gruesa y resistente que la que tenía.

Allí consiguió hacerse con una considerable fortuna como comerciante y, más tarde, abandonó sus negocios y se fue a vivir a York, donde se casó con mi madre, que pertenecía a la familia Robinson, una de las buenas familias del condado de la cual obtuve mi nombre, Robinson Kreutznaer. Mas, por la habitual alteración de las palabras que se hace en Inglaterra, ahora nos llaman y nosotros también nos llamamos y escribimos nuestro nombre Crusoe; y así me han llamado siempre mis compañeros. Tenía dos hermanos mayores, uno de ellos fue coronel de un regimiento de infantería inglesa en Flandes, que antes había estado bajo el mando del célebre coronel Lockhart, y murió en la batalla de Dunkerque contra los españoles. Lo que fue de mi segundo hermano, nunca lo he sabido al igual que mi padre y mi madre tampoco supieron lo que fue de mí.
