Il gatto - la più elegante, cocciuta e scaltra delle creature - è stato un soggetto prediletto da artisti di ogni cultura ed epoca, fin dalla notte dei tempi. La spettacolare incisione rupestre realizzata in Libia settemila anni fa è forse la più antica testimonianza di una zuffa tra felini, da cui prende avvio una lunga e ininterrotta tradizione visiva scandita da sentimenti alterni verso il gatto.
