Training For Your Old Lady Body
'Simply the best book I've read on women's fitness and health' PROFESSOR ALICE ROBERTS'A roadmap for being strong, capable, and free in our bodies at every age' JAMEELA JAMIL'Witty, data-driven and realistic . . . the only way exercise should be written about!' JENNIFER COX What comes to mind when you picture your older self? For too long, social media and the fitness industry have prioritised aesthetics over our health. Every year, we are bombarded with the message to 'train for our bikini body', warping our relationship with exercise and flooding us with misinformation. It's easy to feel overwhelmed, or worse, give up on your fitness journey altogether. When Elizabeth Davies wet herself during an exercise class, she realised she knew next to nothing about her body. Ditching her law career to become a personal trainer meant she discovered some real home truths along the way. Like learning that muscle mass decreases by approximately 3-8% per decade after the age of thirty, or that osteoporosis affects one in three women over the age of 50 worldwide.Finding the best products to fight wrinkles might make you look younger, but they won't protect your muscles or your bone density. And what about mobility? Your pelvic floor? Your heart?Organised around core principles rather than strict prescriptions, Training For Your Old Lady Body invites readers to understand their bodies, make informed decisions and build a long-term, compassionate relationship with movement. Rather than offering a rigid programme or prescriptive 'one-size-fits-all' routines, this book gives women the knowledge they need to train in ways that keep them moving well for decades. This is not a six-week bikini body transformation. It's a way of training for life.

So You Want to be a Nurse?
This fascinating 4-part memoir of Chris Davies Curtis' forty years as a nurse is divided into four parts. The ongoing story glides from one area to another, with personal recollections of her two marriages, and working in London, the tiny feudal Island of Sark, and New Zealand.Part one; 'The Student' 1958-60, takes us to the 1950s as a trainee, where as students, nurses were trained in ward cleaning, cupping and applying leaches, as well as the finer points of total patient care. We share her experiences in various wards, and her first day in theatre, where there was a leg amputation taking place. She was left holding the leg, not knowing what to do with it.Part two, 'London':1960-66 and 1976. After marrying Ken, Chris variously works as a dental nurse, having to travel between the poorer East End and the wealthy Harley Street area. She works as a nurse in charge of minor operations, and then as a district nurse, riding a bicycle round a rough area, and coping without modern day conveniences. We learn with her how to boil instruments in a pan of water, in patient's homes, and giving total care.Part three: 'Sark'; 1966-84 and 1984-2009; Chris and Ken move to the tiny car-free feudal Island of Sark , in the British Channel Islands, to open a guest house and smallholding. Chris's life on Sark spans over two marriages, when she was the Island nurse working with the only doctor, sometimes having to act as locum if he was away. The many stories are both poignant and sometime funny. On one occasion a lady fell into an open grave, cracking a rib, with her husband's quip; 'Bet it's the first time a patient came out of the grave, Chris.' Part four; New Zealand; 1972-74, 1976-84 and from 2009. The final section is set in New Zealand where Chris now lives, and where she was a rural district nurse, working on her own and on twenty-four-hour call. Again, she has many tales to tell.To young present-day nurses this delightful book , with its illustrations, will give flashes into a world long gone, and to those of a contemporary age and experience, it will be a reminder. To summarise the author's message when asked 'So you want to be a nurse?' she replied 'Yes, yes, yes.'

Under My Thumb
In the majority of mainstream writing and discussions on music, women appear purely in relation to men as muses, groupies or fangirls, with our own experiences, ideas and arguments dismissed or ignored. But this hasn't stopped generations of women from loving, being moved by and critically appreciating music, even - and sometimes especially - when we feel we shouldn't. Under My Thumb: Songs that Hate Women and the Women Who Love Them is a study of misogyny in music through the eyes of women. It brings together stories from journalists, critics, musicians and fans about artists or songs we love (or used to love) despite their questionable or troubling gender politics, and looks at how these issues interact with race, class and sexuality. As much celebration as critique, this collection explores the joys, tensions, contradictions and complexities of women loving music - however that music may feel about them. Featuring: murder ballads, country, metal, hip hop, emo, indie, Phil Spector, David Bowie, Guns N' Roses, 2Pac, the Rolling Stones, Bob Dylan, AC/DC, Elvis Costello, Jarvis Cocker, Kanye West, Swans, Eminem, Jay-Z, Taylor Swift, Combichrist and many more.
