Das Glarnerland - der Kanton Glarus in der Ostschweiz - ist ein Paradies für Bergliebhaber. Der markante Tödi, 3614 Meter hoch, und der Glärnisch mit dem bekanntesten Gipfel Vrenelisgärtli sind landschaftlich als auch alpinistisch berühmt.Dank der Flüsse und Bäche mit einem natürlichen Gefälle entwickelte sich das Tal im 19. Jahrhundert zu einer blühenden Wirtschaftsregion - mit Stoffdruckereien, Spinnereien, Webereien, die heute jedoch nicht mehr existieren. Im Sommer 2016 publizierte "Du" darüber eine Ausgabe: "Fredy A. Legler und das Glarnerland".Genau zehn Jahre später blickt die "Du" auf ein anderes Thema dieser Naturregion. Wie lebten damals die Kinder auf den vielen Höfen, die sich abgelegen in den Bergen befinden? Sie waren abgeschnitten vom Rest der Welt, erfuhren aber die Jahreszeiten und deren Abläufe. Sie waren mit dem Flecken Erde vertraut, auf dem sie lebten, den sie bewohnten und bewirtschafteten, mit Vater, Mutter und Geschwistern. Sie waren bodenständig. Die Natur gab ihrem Leben die Richtung vor.In Braunwald lebte damals ein eigenwilliger Fotograf - Emil Brunner. Braunwald war in den Vierzigerjahren ein beliebter Tourismusort. Er liegt nicht wie andere Dörfer im Tal und eingeschlossen von Bergen, sondern erhöht auf einer Sonnenterrasse. Das vermittelt ein anderes Lebensgefühl, als wenn man sich unten im Schatten der Felswände erdrückt fühlt. Es gibt in der Schweiz nur wenig Dörfer in dieser Lage.Emil Brunner sass stets auf der Sonnenterrasse seines Chalet 'Mungg' und hämmerte Texte und Bildlegenden von seinen Fotoreportagen in die mechanische Schreibmaschine. Diese erschienen in Weltmagazinen wie Paris Match, Harper's Bazaar und Life.Wer ihn dabei beobachtete, war Fridolin Walcher, ein kleiner Junge, heute selbst ein Fotograf. Er erinnert sich, wie Brunner drei Monate im Jahr verschwand und dann plötzlich wieder auftauchte. Damals verstand er das nicht. Aber wenn er wieder da war, erzählte er ihm mit Inbrunst und hervortretenden Augen von Feuerland. In Walchers Fantasie war das ein Land, das brannte. Oder Brunner erzählte mit Wallung, er gehe nach Afrika zu den Menschenfressern. Brunner reiste um die Welt, was damals noch ein riskantes Unternehmen war.Während des Zweiten Weltkriegs jedoch war das nicht möglich. Also fotografierte Brunner in der Welt, in der er lebte. Entstanden ist daraus ein einmaliges Werk von Fotografien über Bergkinder. Rund 1700 Negative dieser Bilder sind heute in der Fotostiftung Schweiz in Winterthur. Dass diese heute dort sind, ist Fridolin Walcher zu verdanken. Als Brunner 1995 verstarb, wollte man den ganzen Nachlass in eine Mulde kippen, um das Chalet verkaufsbereit zu machen. Da aber Walcher um den Schatz wusste, der sich darin befand, konnte er mit grossen Mühen erwirken, dass das Haus versiegelt wurde. So ergab sich die Möglichkeit für den Fotohistoriker Professor Paul Hugger, sich der Sache anzunehmen.So ist Brunners Vermächtnis erhalten geblieben. Die "Bergkinder" in dieser Ausgabe erzählen davon, wie die Kindheit in den Kriegsjahren war, welche Freuden und Leiden sie erfuhren - ein Zeitzeugnis.Vom 20. Juni bis 18. Oktober 2026 gibt es eine von Fridolin Walcher kuratierte Ausstellung, bei der man die Bilder in den Räumen von BSINTI, auf Wanderwegen und in Weideställen betrachten kann. Das BSINTI, ein einzigartiger Kulturort in Braunwald, wurde von Walcher und dem Schweizer Botschafter Benedikt Wechsler initiiert und wird seit bald fünfzehn Jahren von vielen Freiwilligen getragen. Es wurde auch von Annette Ringier massgeblich unterstützt. Dieses Kulturengagement führte letztlich auch zu diesem "Du".
