Ground & Figure, Figure & Ground

This is a remarkable and extensive monograph on the work of the Dutch artist and sculptor Marien Schouten (b. 1956, NL). Like a director, the artist was in complete control of the creative process, from the composition and autobiographical structure of the texts to the graphic design and layout of the book. This makes 'Ground & Figure, Figure & Ground' a comprehensive overview, and a unique encounter with the artist. With text contributions by Hans Janssen, Ulrich Loock, Ernst van Alphen, and Marien Schouten. 'Increasingly I accepted the impulses of intuition to direct my choices. I see it as the artist’s role to make the subconscious less opaque, to slightly alter its borders and make them porous. One way of familiarizing yourself with a motif which meaning you don’t fully understand, is repetition. A motif, when repeated in different contexts and combined with other motifs or performed in various media, accumulates its own history. Each repetition reveals the motif’s characteristics in a new light. Over time, the motif becomes more familiar and articulated. The need to analyze its origin becomes less, it has become a new reality.' - Marien Schouten

Holocaust Effects in Contemporary Art, Literature, and Theory

In the face of strong moral and aesthetic pressure to deal with the Holocaust in strictly historical and documentary modes, this book discusses why and how reenactment of the Holocaust in art and imaginative literature can be successful in simultaneously presenting, analyzing, and working through this apocalyptic moment in human history.

    Geert Lap Specific Objects

Thanks to his great technical know-how and boundless craftmanship, the Dutch ceramicist Geert Lap (1951-2017) left an oeuvre that is cherished around the world in many museums and private collections. This book is the result of a unique photo project. Erik and Petra Hesmerg spent years travelling the world to document Geert Lap’s work. They were granted exclusive access to the homes of private collectors and their photographs bear witness to the diverse and sometimes astonishing combinations the collectors created to exhibit Lap’s work in their homes. Geert Lap – Specific Objects also includes highly detailed, full-page photographs that show the prominent position accorded to Lap’s oeuvre in the collections of major Dutch museums. Access to the artist’s private archive was given to Titus M. Eliëns. His biographical essay provides a penetrating insight into the life and work of this perfectionist pur sang, who devoted his life to the consummate ceramic form. Geert Lap. Specific Objects is completed with contributions by Ernst van Alphen and Jac Geurts.

    Geert Lap Specific Objects
