Max Euwe, de vijfde wereldkampioen
Toen Max Euwe in 1935 Alexander Aljechin versloeg, verbaasde hij de schaakwereld. Een bescheiden Nederlandse leraar wiskunde had de meest charismatische en gevreesde wereldkampioen onttroond. Meteen rees de vraag: was Euwe een waardig kampioen? Hoorde hij werkelijk thuis in het rijtje van grootheden als Anderssen, Morphy, Steinitz, Lasker, Capablanca en Aljechin? Bijna een eeuw later beïnvloeden die vragen nog steeds hoe we ons Euwe herinneren. Te vaak wordt hij onderschat. Dit boek werpt een frisse blik op Euwe’s jaren als wereldkampioen. Het corrigeert het hardnekkige beeld van Euwe als een kort intermezzo — een voorstelling die grotendeels voortkomt uit Aljechin’s krachtig geformuleerde zelfportret. Euwe speelde een ander spel. In zijn analyses was hij bescheiden over zijn eigen successen, royaal in zijn lof voor tegenstanders en hij plaatste zichzelf nooit op een voetstuk, ook niet wanneer hij dat verdiende. Op basis van oorspronkelijke bronnen en toernooiresultaten, en met nieuwe analyses van zijn partijen met behulp van moderne engines, plaatsen de auteurs Euwe’s prestaties in de juiste historische context. Het beeld dat oprijst is helder: Euwe won niet alleen de titel — hij hoorde aan de top te staan. In het midden van de jaren dertig was hij structureel gelijkwaardig aan de beste spelers ter wereld, en versloeg hij hen met regelmaat. Dit boek is een evenwichtige en overtuigende herwaardering van Max Euwe als topschaker. En die kan maar tot één conclusie leiden: Max Euwe was geen voetnoot in de schaakgeschiedenis, maar een volwaardig en verdiend wereldkampioen. Paul van der Sterren is grootmeester en tweevoudig Nederlands kampioen. Hij plaatste zich voor de Kandidatenmatches voor het wereldkampioenschap. Zijn autobiografie In Black and White won in 2024 de ECF Chess Book of the Year Award. Verder schreef hij onder meer Mindful Chess en Fundamental Chess Openings. Erwin l’Ami is grootmeester, voormalig Nederlands kampioen en winnaar van het Reykjavik Open 2015. Hij is een erkend specialist op het gebied van schaakopeningen en ontwikkelde meerdere online cursussen voor Chessable.
