Fue una novelista inglesa que comenzó su carrera con relatos de carácter moral e instructivo para el público infantil, para después adentrarse en la ficción histórica dirigida a lectoras jóvenes y, más tarde, en la novela romántica para adultos. Escribió alrededor de 350 libros: más de 200 bajo su propio nombre y el resto con los seudónimos H. F. E., Cecil Adair, E. Ward y Evelyn Dare. Hija del destacado historiador victoriano Mary Anne Everett Green y del artista George Pycock Green, recibió educación en casa durante su infancia antes de ingresar en el Bedford College de Londres entre 1872 y 1873, período en el que escribió su primera novela, y posteriormente en la Real Academia de Música.
