In de oudheid bestond het ‘goede’ uit eigenschappen als moed, strijdvaardigheid, expansiedrift en oorlog voeren. De machthebbers legden deze moraal op aan het volk. ‘Slecht’ waren in hun ogen de morele waarden van de ondergeschikten: medelijden, nederigheid en schuldbewustzijn. Later keerde de joods-christelijke moraal deze waarden om. Medelijden en nederigheid werden verheven tot het ‘goede’; moed en expansiedrift werden gedevalueerd tot het ‘kwaad’. Nietzsche pleit voor een herstel van de oorspronkelijke betekenis van goed en kwaad. De inzet van zijn boek is een herwaardering van alle waarden. Friedrich Nietzsche begon als briljante hoogleraar filologie en maakte naam met De geboorte van de tragedie (1872), maar brak pas echt door toen hij de academische wereld verliet. In de tien jaar van zijn nomadische bestaan – tussen zijn ontslag als hoogleraar klassieke talen in Basel (1879) en zijn val in de waanzin (1889) – schreef Nietzsche in een explosie van scheppingskracht een ongeëvenaard filosofisch oeuvre bij elkaar. De vrolijke wetenschap (1882), Aldus sprak Zarathoestra (1883-1885), Voorbij goed en kwaad (1886) en Genealogie van de moraal (1887) vormen de hoogtepunten van deze creatieve eruptie.
