The Road to Wigan Pier
Eric Arthur Blair (George Orwell) was born in India in 1903. He was educated at Eton, served with the Indian Imperial Police in Burma, and worked in Britain as a private tutor, schoolteacher, bookshop assistant and journalist. In 1936, Orwell went to fight for the Republicans in the Spanish Civil War and was wounded. In 1938 he was admitted into a sanatorium and from then on was never fully fit. George Orwell died in London in 1950.

De Weg naar Wigan Pier
In het voorjaar van 1936 vertrok George Orwell naar de industriële regio’s van Noord-Engeland om de sociale gevolgen van de economische depressie vast te leggen. Het resultaat is De weg naar Wigan Pier, dat opent met een indringende, bijna tactiele reportage over het leven van de mijnwerkers in Lancashire en Yorkshire. Orwell voert de lezer mee naar de claustrofobische diepten van de steenkoolmijnen en schetst een rauw beeld van de mensonterende woonomstandigheden, de chronische werkloosheid en de fysieke uitputting van de arbeidersklasse. Deze sociologische observaties gebruikt hij vervolgens als fundament voor een diepere analyse van de maatschappelijke breuklijnen in het Groot-Brittannië van de jaren dertig. In het tweede deel van het boek bouwt hij hierop verder door zich te richten op de gevolgen daarvan voor de politieke polarisatie tussen socialisme en fascisme. Hij beschrijft hoe het socialisme, door een sterke focus op dogmatische theorieën, een technocratische toekomstvisie en een miskenning van culturele identiteit, veel potentiële aanhangers van zich vervreemdt en in de armen van het fascisme drijft. Om het fascisme effectief te bestrijden, zo waarschuwt Orwell, dient het socialisme zich van intellectueel snobisme te ontdoen en zich te heroriënteren op de fundamentele waarden van vrijheid en rechtvaardigheid. Hoewel De weg naar Wigan Pier voor het eerst in 1937 gepubliceerd werd, heeft zijn waarschuwing tegen ideologische blindheid, zowel links als rechts, niets aan relevantie ingeboet. Integendeel.
