Tra il 20 dicembre 1941 e il 13 marzo 1943 George Orwell scrisse per la BBC quarantanove commenti di guerra destinati all'India e al pubblico dell'Eastern Service. Erano settimane decisive: l'Europa era sotto il dominio nazista, il Giappone avanzava in Asia, l'Impero britannico combatteva per la propria sopravvivenza e insieme cercava di conservare la lealtà di territori in cui la richiesta d'indipendenza era ormai irreversibile. Orwell, socialista, antitotalitario e ostile all'imperialismo, si trovò così nel cuore di una contraddizione storica che questi testi non nascondono mai. "Cronache di guerra" raccoglie quei commenti nella forma ricostruita da W. J. West, restituendo anche passi espunti o attenuati dalla censura di guerra. Ricordi della guerra di Spagna
Nel dicembre del 1936 George Orwell si recò in Spagna, dove da alcuni mesi infuriava la guerra civile che vide scontrarsi il Governo repubblicano e i falangisti rivoltosi guidati da Francisco Franco. Partito con il proposito di scrivere articoli per i giornali con cui collaborava, ben presto lo scrittore si arruolò nelle brigate internazionali a fianco della Repubblica, dove combatté nelle file del Partido Obrero de Unificación Marxista (POUM) finché non venne gravemente ferito nel maggio successivo. Universalmente noto è il frutto di quell'esperienza, il celeberrimo memoir "Omaggio alla Catalogna" (1938), ma lo stesso non si può dire degli articoli che Orwell scrisse su quei tragici mesi. "Vuotare il sacco spagnolo", dell'estate del 1937, è una testimonianza a caldo degli eventi che non risparmia severe critiche al Governo repubblicano, colpevole di essere preoccupato più ancora da una possibile rivoluzione proletaria che non dal golpe fascista; e un'analoga visuale la ritroviamo anche nel raro e coevo "Testimone a Barcellona", incentrato sulle "Giornate di maggio" del 1937 che ebbero come conseguenza la messa al bando del POUM, in seguito alla quale Orwell fu poi costretto a fuggire dalla Spagna. Completa il volume il saggio "Ripensando alla guerra di Spagna" (1942), in cui l'autore sembra voler ripercorrere il senso di quell'esperienza, con i ricordi lucidi e coinvolgenti del fronte aragonese, e gli insegnamenti che se ne possono trarre per salvare la democrazia dal nazifascismo e da ogni forma di totalitarismo: un rischio che non sembra mai tramontare e che proprio l'epoca in cui viviamo rende di nuovo attuale.
