Herodotus (ca. 484-424 v.Chr.) schreef het oudste bewaard gebleven prozawerk van Europa. Zijn uitgangspunt was oorlog. De slagen bij Marathon, Thermopylai en Salamis en Plataiai waren in Herodotus’ tijd al bekend als de grote confrontaties tussen de wereldmacht van de Perzen en de coalitie van Griekse stadsstaten.
