Apples & Pears Workbook B
Apples and Pears is a spelling programme that really works-even with pupils with poor memories or SEN. Built around phonics and morphemes, the scripted lessons are very easy to use; all the lesson planning and monitoring is built in making it ideal for parents and Teaching Assistants. It progresses through the English spelling code, starting with single letters. Common, less predictable patterns are addednext and finally the morphemes that are the building blocks of so many of our longer words-along with the rules that cement them together. All through the programme, high frequency, less regular words are trickled in. The basics of grammar are included too. Everything is practised and reviewed until it is automatic. In Book B Pupils learn the correct use of the apostrophe for contractions and possessives. The morphemic strategy is extended, teaching the pupil why we drop the 'e' from 'hope' when we write 'hoping', but not 'hopeless'. It also covers the doubling rule, explaining why we double the 'r' in 'starring', but not in 'starless'. Split digraph words, plus a range of new spelling patterns and irregular spellings are introduced at a carefully controlled rate.

Bear Necessities Book A1
Bear Necessities is designed for children who need extra support with the basics of learning to read; children who are learning letter-sound correspondences but are struggling with starting to read. The books starts by teaching blending in small, easily-mastered steps, beginning with oral blending with simple picture cues. At the same time, the basic flashcards-which are used at the start and end of each session-teach children instantaneous recognition of single letter sounds and unambiguous digraphs (e.g., ee, ar, sh). The oral blending skills are gradually combined with letter recognition and transferred to print. The transition is gentle enough to ensure that the pupil rarely makes a mistake. Within a few weeks, children are beginning to read simple three-letter words. When basic blending skills are securely in place, high-frequency irregular words are gradually introduced in simple sentences with the additional reinforcement of tracing exercises. Our innovative 'Bear Markets', mini-scripts for two or three voices, are very popular with pupils eager to show off their newly-acquired reading skills!

Dancing Bears Book A
Dancing Bears Book A is designed for pupils who are starting to read but are not keeping up with whole class teaching. It can also be used with older children with a reading age of not more than 7 years. The book starts with Decoding Power Pages consisting of carefully-structured word lists of simple three-letter words. Common, unambiguous digraphs (e.g., ee, ar, sh) are introduced very quickly. Less predictable spelling patterns and common irregular words (I, you, he, me, we, be) are introduced at a controlled rate, first in simple sentences with plenty of multi-sensory practice, and then once the pupil has developed good, basic decoding skills, with Cloze Sentences. Cloze Sentences encourage reading for meaning and later on they play a big role in teaching vocabulary. Final and initial consonant blends are introduced in the second half of the book, and timed exercises develop fluency.A selection of 'Bear Markets'-micro-dramas for two or three voices-that were so popular when we first introduced them Bear Necessities are included in the latest edition. There are two serial stories to maintain interest, with each episode giving more sustained practice of a new pattern.

Dancing Bears Book B
Dancing Bears Book B contains similar exercises to Dancing Bears Book A. Words with suffixes-ing, ly, ed, er, en-are taught, preparing pupils for the morphemic approach to decoding multi-syllable words that has made our Word Builder exercises such a tremendous success. Split digraph (magic 'e') words are introduced in this book. Dyslexic pupils often have a lot of trouble with silent 'e', so this gets a lot of practice and review. Soft 'c' and soft 'g' at the ends of words (nice, page) are taught and other new patterns include less-common digraphs and trigraphs (ur, aw, tch, dge), and three-letter consonant blends (str, spl). Ambiguous digraphs (ea, oo) are introduced along with a large range of irregular spelling patterns in the cloze sentences. With our unique Word Builders, pupils lose their fear of long words and reading them in context of helps to teach the meanings. The serial story continues with longer episodes in this book.

Dancing Bears Book C
This is the level where reading ability really starts to take off. Difficult -re endings, as in future, entire, and compare are taught, along with the common -ion and -le endings. One pattern which can cause a lot of problems is when the silent 'e' is dropped in words like hoping, pupils often forget that the vowel is still long; so they will read hopping instead. Dancing Bears Book C contains plenty of exercises which make this pattern easy.Words beginning with soft c (central, circle) and soft g (gentle, gypsy) are introduced, patterns introduced in Books A and B are constantly revisited to make sure they are not forgotten. The y to i rule (copy, copies) is taught and words starting with ph and hard ch (photo, chemist) are introduced. At this level, the cloze sentences and Wordbuilders are an important aid to building vocabulary. The serial story continues to its happy conclusion.
