Het Italiaanse meisje
Het Italiaanse meisje is een van de opmerkelijkste romans uit het oeuvre van Iris Murdoch en vertelt het verhaal van Edmund die, nadat hij zich van zijn familie had afgekeerd, op een dag terugkeert naar het huis van zijn familie in het noorden van Engeland, om de begrafenis van zijn moeder bij te wonen. Hoewel hij zich voorgenomen had om met de eerstvolgende trein weer te vertrekken, wordt hij al snel meegezogen in een web van oude spanningen en nieuwe onthullingen. Zijn familieleden, ieder gevangen in hun eigen worstelingen, openbaren hun geheimen aan hem: verboden liefdes, verborgen verlangens en diepe schaamte. Te midden van deze chaos staat Maria, de trouwe Italiaanse bediende die al jaren het gezin samenhoudt. Maar wie is zij werkelijk, en welke rol speelt zij in de duistere dynamiek van deze familie? In Het Italiaanse meisje verweeft Iris Murdoch complexe menselijke relaties, morele vraagstukken en psychologische diepgang. Het resultaat is een indringende filosofische roman over schuld, liefde en verlossing, geschreven in Murdochs kenmerkende meeslepende stijl, maar waarin ze ook elementen van de gothic novel verwerkt. Dame Iris Murdoch (1919-1999) was een van de meest invloedrijke Britse romanschrijvers en filosofen van de twintigste eeuw. Geboren in Dublin, groeide ze op in Londen en studeerde klassieke talen en filosofie in Oxford, waar ze later ook zelf doceerde. Als romanschrijver debuteerde ze in 1954 met Under the Net waarna ze zou uitgroeien tot een van de productiefste schrijvers van haar generatie. In totaal verschenen er zesentwintig romans van haar hand naast tal van filosofische werken, toneelstukken, gedichten en kritieken. Haar werken staan bekend om hun complexe personages, morele dilemma's en zwarte humor. Als filosoof putte Murdoch inspiratie uit Plato en Simone Weil en vormde ze een alternatief voor de gangbare filosofie van haar tijd. Murdoch overleed in 1999 aan de gevolgen van alzheimer. Het Britse dagblad The Times plaatste Murdoch enkele jaren later op nummer 12 in de lijst van de vijftig beste Britse schrijvers sinds 1945.

De roman over een groep mensen die – ver van de drukke wereld – tot rust wil komen in de religieuze gemeenschap Imber Court is tegelijk geestig en serieus. Murdoch combineert in deze roman een uiterst ingenieuze plot met een scherpe blik op de menselijke geest. Centraal in dit verhaal staan Dora, die haar man heeft verlaten, en Michael, de geestelijk leider van Imber Court. Hij is homoseksueel en wordt onmiddellijk verliefd op de jonge student Toby, die een paar maanden op Imber Court komt werken voor hij naar de universiteit gaat. Murdoch schrijft met veel compassie over Michael en zijn verliefdheid. The Bell verscheen in 1961 in een vertaling van Hella S. Haasse als De klok. Dit derde deel van de Regenboogreeks bevat een nawoord van Murdoch-kenner Doeke Sijens.
