Een prachtige ode aan de vele auto’s in de Lefranc-reeks. Begon Jacques Martin de stripreeks Lefranc om de autos te kunnen tekenen die hij in Alex niet kon tekenen? Deze vraag is opzettelijk provocerend. Maar toch... In Lefranc zijn auto’s niet zomaar decorstukken. Ze vormen eerder een rode draad: van album tot album ondersteunen ze het ritme, dragen ze bij tot de sfeer, verschaffen ze de lezer geografische en temporele referenties via getrouwe reproducties van de modellen die in een bepaald land op een bepaald moment in gebruik waren, en karakteriseren ze de personages. Lefrancs Alfa Romeo Giulietta Sprint Veloce past perfect bij de jonge verslaggever. Het personage Axel Borg is trotser en heeft veel autos: Rolls-Royce, Bentley, Ferrari. Jacques Martin was dankzij autos bij de krant Kuifje binnengekomen. In het voorjaar van 1948 stelde hij het project van een autocolumn voor, die hij tot 1953 heeft volgehouden.
